It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations. At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easy�, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.� The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy� from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. The improvisations are full of imagery which are evocative and emotionally charged.�-David CherwienThis unified set represents nine Stations of the Cross, but the pieces can also be used individually as preludes, hymn introductions, or worship interludes. It was originally adopted in 1960 upon independence from Belgium but was replaced by La Zaïroise when the Congo changed its name to Zaire in 1971. It was finally reinstated when the Congo was reorganised in 1997. The lyrics were written by historian and professor Joseph Lutumba, and the music was composed by Jesuit father Simon-Pierre Boka di Mpasi Londi, who also wrote and composed La Zaïroise.

Old Simon the King is a Playford English Country Dance tune that appears in my anthology of duos titled Of Castles, Kings, and Courts. The anthology includes 13 Playford tunes and is available in its entirety as a separate download. What's more, for this series I offer the tune from the anthology along with another version: The alternate version adds divisions, a common performance practice for Renaissance and English Country Dance music. These duos are delightful for study as well as performance. As Kammeraderie, we are recording all of our duo anthologies in 2015, and that challenging but satisfying journey has inspired us to explore more deeply the practice of adding variations and divisions to Playford's music. The art of divisions makes the performance unique and also extends it. I've decided to make the results available as sheet music in the Regal Playford series.
