I promised I would create simplified versions one day and here they are!  The GLORIA PATRI comes in two versions:  Greatorex version in Eb and Meineke version in G. The DOXOLOGY comes in two versions both attributed to Louis Bourgeois so I call them Version One and Version Two, both in the key of G.These LATE ELEMENTARY pieces are written with the simple melody in the right hand and chords for left hand accompaniment.  Each is a page long, and the audio lets you hear each piece in the order mentioned here. Solo E Pensoso, which translates to Alone and thoughtful was a setting of the sonnet by the same name written by Francesco Petrarch in the 1300's. Luca Marenzio depicted the poet walking alone with the slowly rising chromactic line in the beginning. Where the words flee or escape appeared in the original text he depicted them with fast moving figures. This version for modern concert band maintains all of the original material with some parts repeated for length and musical effect. It is playable by advanced high school bands and college level bands.

Gesualdo, a prince of Venosa, is infamously remembered for murdering his first wife and her lover. However, his legacy to the world of music is undeniable. While his use of chromaticism is most associated with his madrigals, his religious works, such as this, are more diatonic. When he does employ dissonance and chromaticism it has a far more dramatic effect. This setting is playable by middle school bands and can be played with limited instrumentation. 2nd clarinet parts remain below the break and 2nd trumpet parts stay in a manageable range. It provides the opportunity to both teach expressive playing and introduce the idea of chromaticism to students
