The song is distinguished by its leggiadria and dolcezza, and it was one of the first of Caccini's songs to be widely disseminated through Italy and Europe. Amarilli, mia bella is the oldest song in the 24 Italian Songs and Arias. Various composers have reworked it, and it has appeared in vocal anthologies up to the present day.Le nuove musiche is a significant collection of monodies and songs for solo voice and basso continuo by the composer Giulio Caccini, published in Florence in July 1602. It is one of the earliest and most significant examples of music written in the early baroque style of the seconda pratica. The volume contains 12 madrigals and ten arias and is dedicated to Lorenzo Salviati. It is known for its essential introduction, which clearly describes the purpose, intent, and correct performance of monody from the time. The preface also includes musical examples of ornaments and expresses Caccini's disappointment at inappropriate ornamentation by the singers of his day. Le nuove musiche was highly influential and inspired many similar collections in the seventeenth century. It is regularly anthologized in modern collections, and its success changed the course of music history.

Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast. Silver Wedding is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Make sure the melody is always prominent whichever instrument takes it. 'The Salley Gardens' is of Irish origin with words by W.B. Yeats. I have tried to create a rather dream-like atmosphere; the quaver passages should flow smoothly with the phrasing well observed. 'The Wraggle-Taggle Gypsies' should rollick along with good contrast between the slurred and staccato notes. 'The Water Is Wide', although of Scottish origin, was included in Cecil Sharpe's 'Folk Songs from Somerset'. It's in a contemplative style; again, make sure the melody line is never over-powered by the other instruments. 'Drunken Sailor' should be played with great humour, preferably after a few tots of rum!
