Thad and Finas (Etude #13) is based on the harmonic progression used by George Gershwin in his song, I Got Rhythm, widely known as rhythm changes.  The form is AABA, divided into 8-measure phrases.  The first chorus (mm. 1 -32) consists mostly of two-handed chordal textures with the melody on top in the right hand.  This chorus includes harmonizations, chord voicings, and melodic shapes similar to those used by jazz composer and arranger Thad Jones.  The second chorus (mm. 33 - 64) consists mainly of single solo melodic lines in the right hand with shell voicings in the left hand that lightly support the melodic lines harmonically and rhythmically.  The third chorus (mm. 65 - 96) begins with melodic lines played in unison with both hands two octaves apart, a style of soloing that jazz pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. (Finas) perfected in the 1950s and 60s.  In the fourth chorus, beginning in measure 97, the harmonic progression is altered in the A sections, borrowing a clever cycle of fifths progression that was first developed by jazz pianists Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk in the 1940s.  Before the piece ends there is a brief moment of stride left hand accompaniment that propels the piece to an exciting conclusion.

The lyrics were added independently by Alec Wilder after he heard the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra perform it. The song has been described by Bob Yurochko (with contributor Wynton Marsalis) in A Short History of Jazz as a “beautiful ballad of mainstream jazz. This arrangement begins with a quiet intro in which both the piano and the Bb Instrument touch very lightly on Silent Night. The easily memorized single stanza is sung first by the altos, who are then joined by and succeeded by the sopranos and then deftly handed off to altos, tenors and basses who are subsequently involved in each four-part cadence point well as other unison and two-part sections. The halved repeat of the stanza can be a very nice piano feature or, optionally a Bb instrument—Flugelhorn (even a muted Trumpet) a Bb Clarinet or a Bb tenor saxophone can supply the solo with the voices singing the very light background. The key change is kept simple, with a descending scale into the new key. The final section makes additional mention of STILLE NACHT as well as echoing the intro at the jazz ending. Still, the instrumental part remains optional and the chord symbols make it easy to include string bass or even gentle jazz guitar (drums on this should, of course be mainly light brushes). The vocal parts are limited to practical ranges and, while there is divisi in the soprano part, each voice is always easily sung). A Farmer's Boy is an example of a piece that gained fame and popularity through the oral traditions of singing in the United Kingdom during the 19th Century. It first appeared in print in an 1832 catalogue of street songs collected James Catnach, and appeared in many other printed books during that century. There are many tunes that are associated with the words, the most popular of these being 'Ye Sons of Albion', a patriotic tune associated with the Napoleonic Wars, that later become extremely popular as regimental march tunes for the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales Regiments.At the beginning of the 20th century legendary Folk Collector Percy Grainger recorded the song on phonograph, the song performed by a M. Tandy of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Just under 50 years later the great Musicologist/Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax recorded a version that can be heard in his vast recording archive.
