The music scene took notice of Erik Satie (1866-1925) all of a sudden: The world premiere of his ballet 'Parade' on 18 May 1917 caused quite a scandal. The production which involved Sergey Diaghilev with his 'Ballets Russes', Pablo Picasso (scenery and costumes), Jean Cocteau (story) as well as Léonide Massine (choreography) divided the music scene of Paris, yet made the composer widely known. Satie who hardly had had any solid musical training and lived in Paris for almost all his life developed a new musical style, in deliberate rejection of the 'Wagnérisme' of his time. Classical form models, new harmonies, stylistic ease, meditative and clownish elements amalgamated in an original way, the perfect example being his '3 Gymnopédies' of 1888 the first of which was here arranged for a solo instrument with piano accompaniment: Thus, it is now possible, even for non-pianists, to play this famous miniature by Satie. Thanks to its easy playability, it can also be used for educational purposes.

My arrangement differs from a lot of arrangements, in that the melody is given to every player, the bass line moves between bassoon, horn and clarinet, and the five members of the quintet do not play together all of the time. Published by Mark Reeves (A0.748652). Erik Satie's Trois Gymnopedies sound so modern that it is hard to believe that they were written way back in 1888. Over the years many editions of these timeless piano gems have been published, yet very few are without inaccuracies and editorial/printing errors. For this new edition, however, the composer's original autographed manuscripts have been used as the initial source material, along with the very first printed editions published in 1888 and 1895. Errors in these first editions have been corrected and Satie's unconventional preference for distributing the notes of chords across both staves has been ignored in favour of grouping the notes together to facilitate chord recognition and performance.

The parts have no page turns and they synchronize easily.Although there are no dynamics on the piece, you will find that the four verses gradually build, with deeper bass and extra countermelodies coming in, as well as a surprise silence. These details will help you find dynamics that work for your particular ensemble. Guitar 2 requires a Capo at the 7th fret, and it's notated with the notes you'd play (not the pitch that comes out).Guitar 4 has the sixth string tuned down to D for a big deep sound.
