This collection of twenty-five well-known Christmas tunes is written in a variety of keys, all suitable for a transverse 12-hole ocarina in C. Because ocarinas come in such a wide variety of pitch ranges, it includes both standard notation and a tablature system so that the player can adjust each piece to fit their instrument, regardless of the key. Additionally, each piece also includes an indication of the overall pitch range, and most tunes fall in the 8-9 note range, which can be played on a 4- or 5- hole ocarina. I composed this for my Christmas recital in 2016 with the following question in mind about Christmas music: Why is piano music so complex while flute music has almost nothing to it? I came to the conclusion that the main difference is that you can play many chords within the piano music. With this difference in mind, I've written a flute medley of Christmas carols, containing both the melody and chords! Essentially, it gives you the oppurtunity to play a balanced, entertaining carol medly that is both challenging and pleasing to hear. This original arrangement includes Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, The First Noel, and briefly ends with Jingle Bells. Please keep in mind the recording sample is only a computer playback. Dan HeslinkThis medley combines three of the most favored Carols celebrating the miracle of Christ’s birth. Angels We Have Heard On High encapsulates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke. The flowing second part of this carol portrays the shepherds’ wonder as they encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising.  The spiritual renewal brought about by the birth of the Christ child is given in What Child Is This? Sung to the tune of the traditional English song Greensleeves, its haunting quality has made it one of the most popular of Christmas carols. And focusing on the immediacy of the Child’s entrance into the world, Away in a Manger has become the most loved of all American Christmas carols.  The medley opens with an eight-measure introduction that immediately establishes the Christmas spirit, and then moves on to Angels We Have Heard on High. The binary form of this section should suggest to the performers two contrasting manners of execution, one involving brisk, rhythmic strokes and the other more legato in nature. At the second indicated rehearsal number What Child Is This? introduces a new key and new meter for new melodic content. The score shapes these phrases with dynamic changes, which should be observed with care. The dynamic arches and divided eighth note passages will enhance the impetus of a rolling ternary meter  The medley’s final selection, Away in a Manger, begins at measure sixty-seven. A light and delicate approach to execution should create an innocent, child-like characterization. The final cadence of this selection is expanded to a bolder conclusion. Players and conductor may wish to experiment with a dead stroke on the last soft note, to artistically suggest that the music may be experienced for a moment even after it is concluded.  This medley will be especially effective programmed on a winter holiday concert. The Sonata Hymnica series by composer-pianist James Siddons explores the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies and their words. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, at times whispering---as a sacred harp. In Sonata Hymnica No. 7, which calls for a soprano soloist, liturgical dancers, and two pianos (4 hands), three 19th-century hymns (words and music) serve as core material from which the music is developed. Movement I, “Climbing Higher,� is based on the African American spiritual “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.� The sustained chords, open harmony, and hammer-stroke rhythm evoke the ascent of a mountain climber. Movement II, “The Solid Rock,� is based on the hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less� (1834) . The soprano sings brief lines from the hymn, interspersed with long passages for the pianos (only) that explore many tonal and rhythmic qualities of the original hymn tune. The driving harmony, albeit in duple meter, makes this the scherzo movement of this sonata. Movement III, “On Snowy Wings,� is based on “O Come, Angel Band� by the New England Methodist preacher Jefferson Hascall (1807-1887). In addition to the soprano singer, the appearance of liturgical dancers as angels with “snowy wings� brings this old hymn into the 21st century. Performance duration: 16 minutes.

There's nothing ancient about its style though, it's full of life, and positively skips along.It may have its origins in the book of Isaiah ch 1 v 3: the ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib.This arrangement is for SSA choir with piano accompaniment and optional violin. If you have a friendly violinist, the violin line adds a real sparkle!People who aren't used to singing in French won't find it too taxing (I hope!) as there's lots of repetition in the verses, and the refrain stays the same.Translation: v1.Between the ox and the grey donkey the little boy sleeps.
