(A0.1022594). 'Re-Creation' Program Notes What is time, and where did it come from? These two questions consumed my thought process while writing Re-Creation. Upon completing the piece, I was no closer to answering those questions, but what I could answer became clear: could I write a piece in which time ceases to exist? In order to do this, I decided early on to throw out conventional notation that tends to restrict most performers. As my thought process evolved, I began contemplating the idea of juxtaposing the continuum of timelessness against the traditional view of time. Not only did this free me from the confines of a specific time, it opened up the entire spectrum of time, creating the possibility of infinity and the eternal existence of the continuity of time that invariably existed from the earliest sketches of this piece. The early sketches of this piece were written in my coastal Californian studio during the summer months of 2014, and because of this, Re-Creation represents not only a freedom of time, but also a sound world unique to California’s breathtaking coast. However, the impetus for this piece was the opening chapters of the book of Genesis, portraying the creation of the world in seven days. In this respect, the usage of three and seven play and important roll in the overall structure of this piece. Re-Creation was also inspired by a vacation I had taken a year before where I drove up the coast, stopping in small towns periodically, to collect poems from local authors. One collection of poems from Jeanie Greensfelder entitled, Biting the Apple, caught my attention. Reading through the poems, I began to realize that each poem was unique in that it marked a special time and place in the authors life, ultimately providing the reader with an autobiographical time capsule. The arch of the author’s life was thus on display for the world to read inevitably transforming her life, rather than her work, into the work of art. My hope for The Creation is that it portrays a snapshot of the Californian coast in which it was written, so that it can have a life of it’s own, free from the confines of it’s author and any concert hall it is performed in.

Lasting approximately 3 minutes, this would make a great encore for a 'cello ensemble concert and would complement my arrangement of the Opening Title (also availble on SheetMusicPlus). Both pieces are a great showcase for the versatility and current popularity of the 'cello. Written entirely in bass clef and never above 4th position (with the exception of A harmonics) this is a very accessible arrangement for most ensembles of beginner/intermediate ability. If played by a 'cello orchestra (rather than 5 individual 'cellists) parts 1 and 2 should be solo in bars 11 - 18 only (or could be 2 celli per part for less confident performers). All other parts are tutti throughout. Dynamics should be varied accordingly. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for 'cello quartet, quintet and sextet are conceived specifically with the range and technical capabilities of the 'cello in mind - no simple transpositions or re-orchestrations of string quartet scores. They are therefore both easily playable and enjoyable by any intermediate to advanced 'cello ensemble. Composed in 1889, It is one of a number of significant works for cello composed by French composer Gabriel Fauré. Élégie, Op.24 was conceived as the slow movement of a cello sonata. The sonata was never completed. Élégie was first performed in 1883 and later published as a stand-alone piece. The work features a somber opening then an intense central section before returning to the elegiac opening theme in C minor.Elegie is dedicated to the cellist Jules Loeb, who gave the first performances accompanied by the composer in December 1883. It was later orchestrated and performed at the Societe Nationale in April 1901, with Pablo Casals as the soloist and the composer as conductor.Fauré later orchestrated this work for cello and orchestra. Many other arrangements exist as solo with piano. This version is for solo baritone saxophone with piano. Difficulty level: advanced. The bari sax part extends well into the altissimo range. Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although it has many accidentals and some quick rhythms, the clearly laid out arrangement is easy to read and interpret. The tempo is quick although the written note values never exceed an eighth note value, and all rhythmic patterns are reinforced with many ringers playing block chords. When the dynamics are performed, this arrangement is a showstopper.This arrangement is for 5, 6, or 7 ringers using two octaves of handbells, and the piece is Level 3 when played with seven ringers. Assignments are included according to the quantity of ringers.The arrangement is very true to the orchestral score by Tchaikowsky. The arranger recommends listening to an orchestral recording of the composition to gain insight into interpreting the piece with handbells.Performance time:• 1 minutes, 15 seconds.
