Adagio for Organ and Strings (formerly attributed to Albinoni) is adapted here as a duet for two keyboards: organ, plus a second keyboard playing the string parts. If no keyboard with a suitable string sound is available, this could be performed with the second keyboard part played on a piano or a second organ. The aim is to allow two players to replicate the original work as closely as possible.

The composer and organist Paul Siefert, baptized in Gdansk on 28 June 1586 and died there on 6 May 1666, belongs to the 'North German organ school'. Thanks to a grant of the town council of Gdansk, Siefert spent the years from 1607 until probably late 1610 studying in Amsterdam where he got important ideas and suggestions as a pupil of Sweelinck. After his return he became deputy organist in Gdansk. From 1611 to 1616 he worked as an organist first at the church in the old town of Königsberg, then at the Warsaw court orchestra. On 23 September 1623 he was appointed organist at the Marienkirche of Gdansk in succession to Michael Weyda where he worked until the end of his life. This edition of his organ works contains 13 fantasias, two chorale preludes and a motet as well as a detailed description of the work in the preface and in the critical report.

The collection contains 12 easy preludes for organ without a pedal. The preludes lend themselves very well to a church service and are excellent pedagogical material.







August Freyer (15 December 1801 – 28 May 1883) was a Polish musician and composer, specializing in both performance and composition on the organ.




August was born in Saxony in 1801. He moved to Warsaw and began his musical career there as a double bass player. He became organist at the Warsaw Evangelical Church, had the organ rebuilt, and turned his church into a prominent musical location while becoming the prominent organist and organ teacher in Warsaw. He made a tour of northern Germany as an organist, from which he received wide acclaim.




August was a musical pupil of Józef Elsner. He became a close associate of Adolf Friedrich Hesse. He promoted Hesse's music to Mikhail Glinka, successful in his performance to the point of reducing his listener to tears. At an early age Stanisław Moniuszko became his pupil, his parents relocated to Warsaw in order to have Stanisław study with Freyer. He died in 1883.




Freyer was largely responsible for the revival of organ music in Poland. He was a master at music balance, both homophonic and polyphonic. His playing was appreciated by Felix Mendelssohn and Louis Spohr. In addition to the aforementioned German concerts, he toured Paris to enthusiastic reception. His most famous composition was a set of Concert Variations of which the final-movement fugue is the most recognized.

Twilight was commissioned by the Prima Rassegna Organista 1995. This short work is written on three levels of sound – long held notes to be heard far in the distance, rapid brief passages and occasional pulsations from the pedals. I've included my rambling note to the performer explaining what I would like to be considered in this piece. Obviously, the element of Twilight is the main focus. The duration is 5 minutes.

Twilight was premiered by Massimo Nosetti at the Prima Rassegna Organistica in Milan, Italy on November 17, 1995

Liszt's works for organ are highlights of the virtuoso Romantic organ literature. This is why many organists will probably welcome the fact that a series of transcriptions based on piano works are added to the rather small Liszt repertoire. Johannes Geffert, professor of artistic organ playing at the Music Academy of Cologne, has chosen works that fit in well with church organ concerts: 'Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude' (from 'Harmonies poétiques et religieuses'), Legend No. 1 'St. François d'Assise - La prédication aux oiseaux', 'Sancta Dorothea' (1877), 'In Festo Transfigurationis Domini nostri Jesu Christ' (1880) and 'Vallée d'Obermann' (from 'Années de Pèlerinage'). All transcriptions are as close and faithful to the original piano version as possible. Interesting addition to the repertoire in good time for the Liszt Year 2011.
