They were written in the same year as the Impromptus, Op. 142, though only the first two pieces were published during Schubert's lifetime. The third Impromptu (Andante) is an wonderful epitome of slow-moving Schubert melody over a flowing arpeggiated accompaniment. This lyrical and meditative work remains unified in mood and texture throughout.
