Walter has a young family and a responsible job as a vet, so he needs a good night’s sleep. When there’s a full moon he sprouts fangs, claws and body hair like all the other werewolves, but rather than howling, he scratches the back of his neck with his leg and goes back to sleep with a whimper. His wife was surprised the first time, but she’s used to it now.

Walter the Weary Werewolf is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. The main melody has many accidentals and challenging timing, while the faster middle section features irregular metre. The range is accessible for both players. 10 Latin Duets is an exciting collection of original compositions by David McKeown, arranged as duets for two Oboes.

Each piece explores a different style and flavour of Latin music, from the Rumbas, Salsas and Mambos of Cuba, to the Sambas and Bossas of Brazil, and on to the Calypsos and Merengues of the Caribbean. Mexico is represented by the Huapango, Venezuela and Colombia by the Joropo, and Argentina and Uruguay by the Tango.

Most of these duets are ideal for players of an Intermediate standard, with two or three more suitable for Advanced Intermediate. It's Now or Never is a ballad recorded by Elvis Presley in 1960. It is one of two popular songs based on the Italian song, the other being There's No Tomorrow

Antonio Vivaldi wrote at least three settings of the hymn Gloria in Excelsis Deo, whose words date probably from the 4th Century and which is an integral part of the Ordinary of the Mass. Gloria in Excelsis Deo is a familiar and popular piece among sacred works by Vivaldi. It was probably written in 1715.

O Christmas Tree, (O Tannenbaum), is a much-loved Christmas song. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Waltz/Swing style for two Oboes. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The melody of O Christmas Tree is Polish in origin and dates back to the sixteenth century. The lyrics we know and love were added much later by German composer Ernst Anschütz in 1824. The lyrics were originally a homage to the fir tree, using the evergreen foliage as a metaphor for constancy and loyalty. The association with Christmas appeared later in the nineteenth century.

With a performance time of three minutes and a half minutes, this version of O Christmas Tree is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz waltz style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.

O Christmas Tree is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Rhythms are syncopated, as one would expect in jazz waltz music, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. Down by the Riverside is an Afro-American Spiritual Hymn and Song. This version is arranged as a duet for two Oboes.

Down by the Riverside was sung in African-American communities before the American Civil War but did not appear in print until included in a 1918 collection of spirituals. Several versions were recorded by gospel choirs in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and Down by the Riverside, with its lyric, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more, was adopted as an anti-war song by the ‘60s counterculture.

Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century.
