I wrote this song when a teenage friend named Dustin died. Years later Dustin's mother was in the hospital. She could see three people standing in the back of her hospital room. She asked her mother, who was present, if she could see anyone standing in the back of her room. Her mother looked to where her daughter pointed, but she couldn't see anyone. She told her mother that she thought the three people that only she could see had come to take her home. She passed away later that day.  Its nice to know that we have family and friends both here and on the other side of life.

We continued to communicate with each other after the opera project, and became great friends, as well as sharing our music with each other for review and suggestions.Gustav told me one time that he was the Assistant Conductor of the AMERICAN PATRIOT WINDS in suburban Atlanta, and in the fall of 2015 called me with a commission to compose a piece for their spring 2016 concert. The result of this commission was A Festive Overture. The piece was composed to celebrate the joy of making music within a community.A Festive Overture was premiered on March 10, 2016 by the American Patriot Winds in Woodstock, Georgia.

So I’ve composed a work for brass firstly dedicated to a great man of the brass band from Liverpool Bob Dean (Sailors Chapel, ex Fodens, Camel Lairds and great pal of Jim Scott) and I studied under his baton at BR Edge Hill and with his help I moved on to the famous Manchester CWS Band. Us bander’s love a good tune and a tune that moves us too, I’ve been told by many who have played this that it ticks those boxes. So, however you celebrate this Christmas, I hope this will inspire memories?

This contemporary Christian song was written by good friends and songwriting partners Chris Werle and John Ford. The song was inspired by a sermon delivered by Rev. Denise Bates, in which she told of how she left her business career to follow Jesus and ultimately become a minister.  The lyrics come from biblical passages about Jesus and his call for the disciples to follow Him.  It is intended primarily for church praise bands that typically consist of keyboard, guitar, bass, and drums. This song started out as an Andean folk melody that Paul Simon came across in 1969 when he played a week-long engagement at a theater in Paris along with the South American group Los Incas, who played an instrumental version of the song called Paso Del Condor. Said Simon: I used to hang around every night to hear them play that. I loved it and I would play it all the time, and then I thought, Let's put words to it.The Peruvian songwriter Daniel Robles recorded this song in 1913, and copyrighted it in the United States in 1933 during his travels in America. When Simon recorded it with his added lyrics, he thought it was a traditional song, as that's what Los Incas told him. When Robles' son filed a lawsuit, Simon had to give Robles a composer credit on the song, with his estate getting those royalties.In discussing the song, Simon always talks about it as being based on a traditional Peruvian song, and we've never heard him mention Robles. This wasn't the first time Simon got tangled over songwriting credits on traditional melodies: Simon & Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair / Canticle was based on a folk song, but his arrangement came from a singer named Martin Carthy. Simon was always clear on his influences, but legal misunderstandings were a problem in these cases.Los Incas, who were the group that introduced Simon to the song, provided the instrumentation when they recorded it in Paris with Simon. Their leader, Jorge Milchberg, played a charango, which is an Andean string instrument made from the shell of an armadillo. Simon played acoustic guitar, and other members of Los Incas played flutes and percussion. When Simon brought the track to America, he added his lyrics. This was one of the easier songs to record for the Bridge Over Troubled Water album, since the backing track was already mixed together - it was just a matter of adding the vocals.The title translates to English as The Condor Passes. The lyrics Robles wrote to the song in 1913 are about returning home to his native Peru.Los Incas leader Jorge Milchberg got a composer credit on this song along with Simon and Robles. Milchberg later became the head of the group Urubamba and remained friends with Simon, who toured with them and produced their first American album. >>The Wainwright Sisters covered this for their 2015 Songs in the Dark album. Lucy Wainwright Roche explained to The Sun: I chose 'El Condor Pasa' because it was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on it guitar and it has a childlike quality to it, but it also has a darkness and sadness that fit in well with the album.Paul Simon performed this on both Sesame Street (in 1977) and The Muppet Show (in 1980).

Geared toward university students and professionals. May be a bit difficult for beginners and even intermediate players. The key has been altered to make it in a slightly more comfortable range for trombone, although it maybe sits a bit high in the melodic parts and a bit low in the bassline at times. Melody and bassline get switched around a lot between parts. Makes it more fun and interesting, but requires some skill in all ranges by all players. Doesn't go below a low E, so you should be able to play without a trigger, but I've been told it can get squirrelly down there without one for some players, so... yeah.I had some consultation with a couple trombone player friends about how to best adapt my horn quartets to trombone, but I'm not a trombone player, I'm a horn player, so if you purchase this and notice any errors (notational, range, clef, etc.) that could be pretty easily fixed, let me know! One Last Bar Then Joe Can Sing (1994) was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the percussion quintet Nexus, and is a reflection on aspects of percussion history, both personal and musical. The members of Nexus are my friends (I played in the Steve Reich Ensemble along with Russ Hartenberger in 1972, the year after Nexus was formed). The piece aimed to demonstrate how a fine percussion ensmeble can be as musically expressive and subtle as, say, a string quartet. The piece starts from the last bar at the end of the second act of my opera Medea, a very short coda for a quintet of untuned percussion instruments during which the curtain falls. In this piece, however, this one apparently innocuous measure is progressively fragmented until it is taken over, little by little, by the addition of tuned percussion instruments. Eventually two metallophones (crotales and songbells) play aria-like material with bows, occasionally joined by the xylophone, and accompanied by marimba and xylophone ostinati. The piece ends with a coda in which phrases are passed from bowed vibraphone to bowed crotales, then to bowed songbells, supported by tremolos on the marimbas. The rare 3-octave songbells that Nexus owns is one of the American instrument maker J. C. Deagan's particularly fine instruments. The piece is effectively a kind of homage to Deagan, the Stradivarius of the tuned percussion world, who collaborated closely with Percy Grainger in the development of tuned percussion music between the wars. The allusions in the title are obvious: the one last bar is the last measure of music from my opera; the song is that of Deagan's songbells. In the case of Joe I wanted to link my father, Joe Bryars (who was a good amateur baritone singer) with Joseph Deagan and his songbells. However, some time after I had written the piece, Nexus's Bob Becker took me to one side and told me (gently) that the initial J in Deagan's name, in fact, stood for JohnGavin BryarsPercussion 1: Crotales (with bow), Chocolo, Mark Tree; Percussion 2I: Song Bells (with bow), Chinese Cymbal, 3 Wood Blocks; Percussion 3: 2 Cymbals, 2 Triangles, Xylophone, Marimba (shared with Marimba II), Vibraphone (with bow); Percussion 4: 2 Cymbals, 2 Gongs, Marimba I (with low F), Maracas; Percussion 5: 2 low Tom-Toms, Marimba II (to low A).

Note from the arranger: One of the things that I’ve always loved about this song is how it sort of modernizes the language of the life of Jesus as its portrayed in the Bible.  There’s nothing about supernatural angels of the Lord who frighten shepherds abiding in the field and, instead, it begins with the story of a husband and wife grappling with the birth of a child; the Last Supper sounds like a gathering of friends at a going-away party.  The Jesus in this song is a very human one and, having sung a lot of sacred repertoire over the years, that’s a side of him I don’t feel like we talk about very much.  The original song features a lot of speak singing over a gentle guitar riff, and I’ve attempted to preserve a bit of that feel with the piano.
