Notes

Skye Boat Song is one of my favoryte folk songs from the British Isles. Skye refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod.

The tune O Waly, Waly is an old Scottish tune, known best by the secular text of The water is wide.  In church use, there is a wide variety of texts used, including When Love Is Found, The Gift of Love, and Though I May Speak with Bravest Fire.  This peaceful setting will serve as a gentle prelude or a meditive offertory, with an original melody interspersed with the hymn tune, which is clearly stated.  It was written and composed on a two manual instrument.

From Wikipedia:
Popular song, particularly in the English-speaking world.
The text (not included in the score) is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 but based on an older Scottish folk song. In 1799, it was set to a traditional tune, which has since become standard.
Robert Burns sent a copy of the original song to the Scots Musical Museum in 1788 with the remark, The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man. Some of the lyrics were indeed collected rather than composed by the poet; the ballad Old Long Syne printed in 1711 by James Watson shows considerable similarity in the first verse and the chorus to Burns' later poem, and is almost certainly derived from the same old song.

This piano solo arrangement is for an advanced intermediate player. Its was driven by a single note always repeated during the whole piece.

Composed by Unknwon (Scottish Folk Music). Arranged by Benjamin Karaca. Celtic,Irish,Multicultural,Patriotic,Renaissance,Traditional,World. 16 pages. Benjamin Karaca #6339839. Published by Benjamin Karaca (A0.946350).

This piece of music is named after Robert the Bruce (or Robert I), King of Scots in the early 14th century. It was likely brought to France by Scottish soldiers who were supporting France in the war against England, hence the French title. The song itself is most likely based on the patriotic Scottish song Scots Wha Hae, which, in turn, derives from the old Scottish melody Hey Tuttie Tatie.

This piece of music is often performed by pipe bands. It is typically played in the key of B-flat major (F Mixolydian). For this arrangement, I transposed it to E-flat major (B-flat Mixolydian), which better suits the saxophone's range.
Originally, I had in mind the instrumentation SAATB. However, I have included the following substitute parts: The second part can be played by either a Soprano or Alto Sax. The third and fourth parts can be played by either an Alto or Tenor Sax. The fifth part can be played by either a Baritone or Bass Saxophone.

Saxophone Quintet SAATB, SATTB (and many other lineups) and Snare Drum. Level: 2/5.

Part 1: Soprano Sax
Part 2: Soprano Sax / Alto Sax
Part 3: Alto Sax / Tenor Sax
Part 4: Alto Sax / Tenor Sax
Part 5: Baritone Sax / Bass Sax
Snare Drum
Score in C

A high-quality arrangement by a professional musician. It also includes interesting information about the piece and helpful tips for interpretation. For more information, please visit my website:

This arrangement of Scottish traditional songs includes three iconic Scottish melodies: Bluebells of Scotland, Turn Again, Thou Fair Elisa, and Annie Laurie. The long soaring melodies and bagpipe-style drones of these songs work beautifully for horn quartet. These arrangements are ideal for weddings, preludes, funerals, and any recital.

The origins of Scottish traditional music date back to at least the late Middle Ages, with songs passed down orally until many of the songs were published in collections in the 18th century. Scotland’s National Poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) famously collected Scottish folk songs and adapted many of the melodies to include his poetry.

Today, elements of Scottish traditional music are found in epic film soundtracks such as Braveheart, Mary Queen of Scots, and Rob Roy, as well as classical symphonic works including Mendelssohn’s Scottish symphony.

Bluebells of Scotland was most famously used by Arthur Pryor in his piece Blue Bells of Scotland for solo trombone and band. There are a few different versions of the melody Turn Again, Thou Fair Elisa, but the melody Robert Burns used (as published in the 1903 edition of The Songs of Robert Burns) is arguably the most beautiful. The timeless song Annie Laurie describes the ill-fated romance between Scottish soldier William Douglas and Annie Laurie, the young daughter of a British aristocrat. The music is often attributed to Lady John Scott (1810-1900).

Auld Lang Syne is a popular song, particularly in the English-speaking world. Traditionally, it is sung to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. By extension, it is also often heard at funerals, graduations, retirements, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions. The text is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 but based on an older Scottish folk song. In 1799, it was set to a traditional tune, which has since become standard. The poem's Scots title may be translated into standard English as old long since or, less literally, long long ago, days gone by, times long past, or old times. Consequently, for auld lang syne, as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as for the sake of old times. This SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet arrangement gives each player an opportunity to play the melody. It is suitable for a wide variety of concerts, performance settings, or other occasions. The duration is 1:50. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

The eleven folk songs in this collection are all from the British Isles or American tradition. They were selected and arranged for my personal voice students, many of whom are beginning singers. This edition is for singers with medium-high voices. Upper ranges approach the top of the treble clef but do not go above the staff. The common thread for all the songs is to provide interesting arrangements for singers of a variety of skill levels with accompaniments that usually are very supportive of young or less experienced voices. All are available separately or in choral settings in a variety of voicings. The songs in this edition are: Down in the Valley (American), All the Pretty Little Horses (American), All Through the Night (Welsh), Annie Laurie (Scottish), The Ash Grove (Welsh), The Colorado Trail (American), Barb’ra Allen (English), The Crystal Spring (English), Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes (English), Greensleeves (English), and Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier (Irish/American). Volume 2 contains an additional eleven folk songs. Each volume is also available for medium-low voices.
