The Welcoming Earth suggests that even death will be a state of peace and comfort, far from the strife of human conflict. This song was written in a time of emotional turmoil. Beautiful and haunting, it capitalizes especially on the bass colors of the piano, and gives assurance of an eventual respite from all our troubles. Simple and accessible, this piece would be great as part of a set on a faculty or student recital, or a professional art song recital, especially as part of a set (see other Gorton compositions).

Juno Award winner, Hugh Hagood Hardy, CM, spent his early musical life in bebop jam sessions.  Ultimately, he would become a composer, pianist, and percussionist (vibraphone), focussing mainly on jazz and easy listening music.

His 1975 single The Homecoming reached number 6 on the US easy listening charts, 41 on the US pop charts, and certified Gold in Canada, reaching number one on the Adult Contemporary chart.  

The soothing melody was well suited as the jingle for the Salada Tea commercial in 1972.  It is still a charming selection today, being both subtle and simple-an excellent choice for a moment of repose in any program. 

Scored for the smaller British Brass Band with a minimum of 9 parts (11 players) up to a full band.  Duration ~ 2:45.  27 pages.
