Purpose: Give piano students an opportunity to play in an orchestra and follow a conductor.
The students must be well prepared for the workshop. 

Instruments: 4–20 keyboards and 2 pianos / grandpianos. 

Part 1 and 2 are played on keyboard by 1-5 students at early intermediate level.
Part 4 and 5 are played on keyboard by 1-5 at entry level.
Part 5 and 6 are played on piano by students with good skills.

Programme note

'Frankenstein', by Mary Shelley, begins with a series of letters from a Mister R Walton to his sister in London, written whilst on board a ship travelling north from Archangel in Russia. The fourth letter begins:

“So strange an accident has happened to us, that I cannot forbear recording it...

Last Monday, we were nearly surrounded by ice, which closed in the ship on all sides, scarcely leaving her the sea-room in which she floated. Our situation was somewhat dangerous, especially as we were compassed round by a very thick fog. We accordingly lay to, hoping that some change would take place in the atmosphere and weather.

About two o'clock the mist cleared, and we beheld, stretched out in every direction, vast and irregular plains of ice, which seemed to have no end.”.

My Prelude on the hymn tune Materna (O Beautiful for Spacious Skies) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations.  Three statements of the tune convey three entirely different moods.  The first is in G-flat major and creates an ethereal mood with its accompaniment of glissandi scales in the upper range of the keyboard.  The second is a straightforward duo with a flowing scalar accompaniment in the key of F major.  A bridge section gradually increases the rhythmic pace, while simultaneouly increasing the dynamic level to fortissimo.  This sets the tone for the final grandiose statement in B-flat major with the melody played in octaves in the bass below a rapid scalar accompaniment in the right hand.  The expected bombastic conclusion is subverted by a rising whole-tone scale in G-flat marked subito piano.  The final phrase returns to the key and mood of the beginning with its upwardly rising glissandi.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

This Christmas/Epiphany anthem for combined choirs is based on the Moravian hymntune, 'Hagen'. John S.C. Kemp has given us a delightful arrangement for antiphonal unison and SATB choirs with keyboard, optional recorder or violin, and optional cello. Although the instruments are optional, if available they will beautifully enhance the piece.

In the Hall of the Mountain King was included by Grieg in his Peer Gynt Suite No.1. This arrangement is for Intermediate Level Piano/Keyboard Duet.  The melody is shared between the Primo and Secondo parts. The written range is kept mostly within the staff and the appropriate performance range of pitches on the keyboard is achieved by octave displacement, i.e. the Primo part is performed an octave higher than written and the Secondo an octave lower. As the performance range extends beyond that of a 61-note keyboard, an acoustic piano or 88-note keyboard is required if both players are to perform on the same instrument.
