A Siciliano is based on a graceful rustic dance of Sicily, and is considered a type of Pastorale.  The Siciliano style always has dotted rhythms.  It is normally in compound time, but I have changed it here to make it more accessible for beginners.  This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr.  Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work.  This makes a great recital piece to develop your melodic tone and showcase the melodies of the Classical Period.  (1 page score, 1 page @ part, with repeats - 2 1/2 minutes).

When writing this, I was trying to capture this sense of emotional struggle that we all face at times. The title is a metaphor for the feeling of being intimidated and overwhelmed by the difficulties we face in life, and making the choice of accepting them and trying to work through them. Often times I think people tend to shy away from their problems rather than addressing them. This work is meant to reflect those emotions when we must have some courage. Like most of my works, this is not written intentionally to indicate a specific form, but it does follow an ABA form. The performers may express some rubato throughout, as it is encouraged in this piece. Originally for Horn & Piano, this version is for the Alto Saxophone & Piano. Difficulty: grade 4 (intermediate).

This selection, Carol of the Bells, also known as Ring, Christmas Bells, is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services. Carol of the Bells was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, a New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow, and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. One version, Ring, Christmas Bells, an English-language variant with Nativity-based lyrics, was written by Minna Louise Hohman in 1947. Regis Bookshar has now arranged the music for a Saxophone Sextet, consisting of 2 Alto Saxophones, 3 Tenor Saxophones and 1 Baritone Saxophone.
