In some traditions, Uriel stands at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, with a fiery sword, preventing Man's return to that paradise on Earth. Uriel is the angel who came to Earth and warned Noah of the Great Flood to come. Uriel also spoke to the biblical prophet Ezra on behalf of God, teaching and answering a series of questions Ezra posed to God. Uriel is associated with several literary and artistic works, notably depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting The Virgin on the Rocks. In this painting, Uriel is shown along with Mary (the mother of Jesus), with Jesus and John the Baptist presented as young toddlers. The composition Uriel makes use of two modal scales to create melodic and harmonic tension and resolution: an altered E Phrygian scale (with a lowered 6th step of the scale) and an altered C Lydian (with a lowered 6th and 7th scale step). The Phrygian scale brings a dark minor quality to the sound, in contrast to the Lydian scale's major yet veiled quality. Worthing U3A’s Inspired Instrumentalists was formed in 2015 with just 6 members, all mixed ability and wanting to make music together. They now have 36 members, still a very mixed ability group, and includes instruments which are not found in the normal orchestra so arrangements have to be made for them. Since March 2020 they have been in Lockdown and unable to meet. It was agreed that they would continue to make music through a form of distanced learning. They receive an arrangement from me to work on and are given a date to submit their audio file which is then collated into a whole piece for all of them to listen to. This is one of the arrangements they have worked on.

Dimension Traveler, Op. 150, for brass quintet was completed 26 Mar 2024.  When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.”  Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed.  With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind.The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77.  The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G.  Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F.  Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax.For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142.  Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée.  There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions.  Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism.  Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre.  Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba.  Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets.  However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous!The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.

The Concertino No. 2 in B Flat was recently discovered while surfing the internet.  The version found stated that it was a concertino for viola and piano.  However the piano reduction had the solo part written for bassoon.  It was followed by a separate solo part for viola.  However upon examination this proved to be and orchestral viola part and not a solo part at all.  From this one could conclude that there must have been, and perhaps still exists, a score and parts for a full orchestral accompaniment.  Although not originally for trombone, this piece lends itself admirably to the lyrical and heroic nature of the trombone.  It is challenging but well-suited to the instrument and a quality piece of music.  The editor hopes that this piece will find its place as a mainstay in the literature for trombone.
