Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The All-Night Vigil (often mis-translated as simply 'Vespers') is an a cappella choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninov, his Op. 37, premiered on 23 March 1915 in Moscow. The piece consists of settings of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. Along with 'The Bells', it was one of Rachmaninov's two favorite compositions and the composer requested that its fifth movement be sung at his funeral. The sixth movement is 'Ave Maria' which is considered to be the most beautiful part of the entire piece and performed independently in many settings, such as this saxophone choir arrangement, adapted from the edition prepared by Stuart Campbell.

So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the altos after delays, while a new variation appears in the sop. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!
