I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and made famous by Barry Manilow. Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976[2] after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975.[3] It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977.[3] Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976.[4]The original version was recorded by The Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with The Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album, Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by then teen-idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Bruce Johnston. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction.  The notes and rhythms are quite easy. It first appears in print in 1850 as a pilgrimage song, having been spread orally in the traditionally Catholic state of Thuringia, a densely forested area in central Germany. In the 20th century, the song became popular in a version relating the story of Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, on her journey to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. The text uses the popular Medieval symbol of the rose for the Virgin Mary and speaks of roses blooming on barren thorn-wood as Mary bears her child through the forest. The work was created as part of a recital feature that took place at the 2021 International Trombone Festival entitled A New Initiative II: Trombone Quartet Music by Composers of Color. The Elysian Trombone Consort created the New Initiative concert series as a vehicle to promote new and existing works by composers from under-represented gender, ethnic and social communities. The concert series aims to highlight the creative scholarship of under-represented artists. The ultimate goal is to encourage the programming and creation of more compositions by these scholars.The title Elysian Fields (also known as Elysium) is a venue in mythology that references a final resting place in the afterlife for the Greek Gods. Although Elysium was originally designated for Greek Gods and mortals who may have been related to the Gods, the venue was also accessible to certain mortals by the Gods for their heroic deeds or by those who enjoyed favor with the Gods. Images of Elysium are said to have radiant sunshine, rolling hills and, according to Homer in his Odyssey, the most pleasant weather conditions – no snow, nor heavy storm, nor ever rain.The music Elysian Fields attempts to capture the frivolity of living in Elysium. It portrays the radiant sunshine and the spirit of joy. The place is by all accounts a surreal landscape where sun rays softly beam down on the fields and, in some cases, it emanates as a heavenly backdrop. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. The English translation of the hymn was completed by the Anglican priest, scholar, and hymn-writer John Mason Neale (1818-1866) and published in his Hymns of the Eastern Church (1862).  Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain is typically sung to either of two hymn tunes: ST. KEVIN, by the English composer Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), and GAUDEAMUS PARITER, by the Bohemian bishop, hymn writer and composer Jan Roh (c. 1487-1547). The latter tune is the basis for this arrangement. This collection of six traditional Spirituals is taken from a larger set of eleven titled The Life of Christ In Spirituals which I wrote as a cantata for my church choir and guest soloists many years ago. Scripture passages were read before each Spiritual, providing the Biblical context. In this booklet a two page bulletin insert with lyrics and Scripture references is provided after the instrumental parts. The scenes depicted in these Spirituals include, among others, the raising of Lazarus, the healing of the sick, and Jesus’ restoration of Peter after the Resurrection. The final song, You Can Tell The World, is an encouragement to spread the good news about Jesus. One song has an obbligato part for clarinet or soprano saxophone, and one has a part for  flute. The remaining five Spirituals are available in another collection titled Five Spirituals for Holy Week, focusing on the events between Palm Sunday and the Resurrection. By inserting those five Spirituals between the 3rd and 4th songs in this collection, the booklets can be combined to perform the set as originally conceived. The songs, however, can also stand alone.  The titles are We Believe This Is Jesus, Honor, Honor Unto The Dying Lamb, Oh, He Raise A Poor Lazarus, You Hear The Lambs A-Cryin', Oh Glory! and You Can Tell The World About This.
