It was later also published as a single piece, entitled The Little Negro and Le petit nègre. Debussy regularly sought exotic influences. In The Little Nigar, he alluded to banjo chords and drums, influenced by American minstrel shows. A Siciliano is based on a graceful rustic dance of Sicily, and is considered a type of Pastorale.  The Siciliano style always has dotted rhythms.  It is normally in compound time, but I have changed it here to make it more accessible for beginners.  This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr.  Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work.  This makes a great recital piece to develop your melodic tone and showcase the melodies of the Classical Period.  (1 page score, 1 page @ part, with repeats - 2 1/2 minutes).

The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.
