It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals.However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing.It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This work was funded by an artist's grant as part of the Bremen-Corona-Hilfen programme.The premiere by the orchestra of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft is scheduled for the beginning of 2024. The first in this set, from darkness, rising, is a lyric caprice which gradually moves from darker modes to brighter modes (locrian to lydian). The next selection, Eidólons, has a veiled, mysterious quality. In this piece, I explore variations based on rhythmic alteration. An eidólon is a spirit or phantasm; the term was a favorite of American poet Walt Whitman. The third entry, Homeostatic, is built upon a concept I refer to as biofeedback music. In this case, I took regularly-spaced readings of my pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation percentage and performed basic arithmetic operations on these figures, the results of which I used to determine a number of musical facets (most notably the essential constituents of the rhythmic gestures). The final piece, Sapta Bodhyanga, I built on a wedge concept (in this case, seven intervals, each becoming larger, ending with the octave). The number seven also features prominently in the design of the rhythmic motives (with chance procedures used in the deployment of these figures). Given the concentration on this number and the use of aleatoric methods, I titled this piece after the Zen Buddhist concept sapta-bodhyang, or seven degrees of enlightenment. If by sunrise she makes allies, reaches the cocoon, and gets exposed to its inner limelight by singing to it she will grow wings and be able to go back home in better shape than she came in by saving LilYpada however if she fails it will be the end. The song exposes in rhymes the alarming situation juxtaposed by the common sense lyrical Firefly Messengers pledging for cooperation between all creatures including the OooAaas who after all are simply under a spell.
