The Symphony is in 4 movements following a more classical ordering and is a little under 35 minutes in length. The initial rising scale idea with 'missing' notes pervades much of the material in the symphony The symphony took longer to compose than is normal for me as it was composed during the difficult period of my father's swiftly evolving final illness, death & dealing with the aftermath. The shadow of my father's final illness & witnessing his swift decline particularly hangs over the slow 2nd movement. The first movement after a broad but forward moving introduction, is energetic with a continual forward momentum. The 3rd movement is a deliberately elusive scherzo movement with a strange inconclusive coda. The finale, after a reserved opening is surprisingly optimistic pushing to a sonorous conclusion. As is the norm for me, I composed directly into full score.Orchestral parts can be supplied upon request.

COMPOSER’S NOTE: Story Nr. 2 for chamber ensemble and a narrator, was written as a commission for the 1983 Children's Music Festival in St. Omer, France. Since its inception, the work has been widely performed in French, German and English. The narrative of Story Nr. 2 is a little known children's story by the great French author and playwright Eugene Ionesco (1912 – 1994). The story is about play on words. Little Josette has a conversation with her father who teaches her the new meaning of words: A Telephone is called Cheese, a Cheese is a Music Box, the Music Box is called a Rug and so on. The meanings become funnier and stranger ad absurdum. Then Josette and her father combine the words into sentences and practice the new mismatched names and objects. The characters participating in the story beside of Josette and her father are Josette's pretty mother and the maid  Jacqueline. Each of the characters has its own musical theme and color represented by distinguished instrumentation: Jossette's theme is played by the flute, the father is represented by the trumpet and trombone, the pretty mother by the oboe and Jacqueline by the xylophone and piano. A Winter's Lament was written during our western Canada winter of 2015.  Although it tends to be a hospitable climate, it also tends, at times to be very grey and wet during the winter months.  With that in mind, I wrote this fiddle ballad which records, in  the opening, my thoughts about the bright, warm spring months to come.  The middle section tends to be somewhat melancholic about the greyness of our winter, but it, in turn, is followed by a recap of what we can look forward to when winter actually departs and spring sunshine returns.  This orchestral composition gives the violins, violas and celli and opportunity to express the melody.

Composed between the 21st July & the 18th October 2021, my 3rd Symphony, at around 34 minutes in duration, is the longest of my three symphonies to date & my most substantial purely orchestral score. The Symphony is in four movements following a fast-slow-fast-slow format. It is a dark probing & at times disturbing score. The Symphony makes much use of the very dark Locrian mode with its prominent diminished 5th (tritone). The 1st movement is angry & driven with a swirling energy. The 2nd movement is a kind of sad processional which builds to protesting battering climax before ending in a sense of resignation. The 3rd movement marked 'with malice' ranges from a sense of waspish humour to downright arrogant brutallity. The slow 4th movement is the longest movement, the opening hinting at two works by Wagner & Holst. The movement has a sense of questioning & searching, perhaps a single word 'why?' sums the movement up & to some extent the Symphony too. Parts are available upon request.

Lev PULVER (1883 – 1970) composed music for the production, and it can be said that its quality perfectly corresponded to the grandeur of the performance as envisioned by Mikhoels. Since the work on the project has been stopped by the death of Mikhoels, the music for Prince Reubeni was preserved only as piano scores. Sergei PICHUGIN includes into this publication his own orchestral versions of two musical episodes of the play: Storm on the Sea and Dance of Dina.
