Sr. Presentia Steffen OSF (1916-2000), colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, composed this simple organ piece on the Midnight Mass Gregorian Chant Communion antiphon. Its text is: In splendoribus sanctorum, ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te; in English, “Amidst the splendours of the heavenly sanctuary, from the womb, before the morning star, I have begotten you.� The manuscript is not dated but was likely created before 1950.  Sr. Presentia succeeded Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF as St. Joseph Convent Chapel organist from 1953 until she suffered a stroke which paralyzed her left side in 1964.  Further information is available from Heritage Music Series editor -- Dr. Sheri L. This new composition is an arrangement for solo organ of the composer's SATB setting of the 15th century text by John Audelay known alternatively as There Is a Flower or The Flower of Jesse. The multiple verses of the poem are set with slight modifications to the melody, and the harmony and texture are also changed with each verse. The listener and performer will immediately notice the juxtaposition of D major and D minor tonality. The work would make a nice addition into the church organist's Advent and Christmas repertoire.

The Nocturne for Trombone and Organ by Alfred Hildebrandt Sørensen was most likely written while he studied violin and composition at the Copenhagen Conservatory of Music from 1903-1905. It was dedicated to trombonist Anton Hansen, who performed it for the first time at the Tivoli Concert Hall on August 8th, 1918, and then at the King's Garden at the Copenhagen Municipality's Free Concerts, undoubtedly in arrangements for symphony orchestra and wind band respectively.This very expressive work, beautifully edited by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen is suitable for intermediate performers as it is all in bass clef and of modest technique and range.The material is from Anton Hansen's sheet music collection in the Royal Library in Copenhagen.The work has been beautifully recorded by Mr. Johansen and organist Ulrik Spang-Hanssen (sample below on YouTube) as part of The Danish Trombone Heritage, a 2-CD album of over twenty original works from the early 20th Century composed by Danish composers for Professor Hansen.Cherry Classics with Mr. Johansen will be publishing all of these works.

Sister Mary Hueller (1921-2017), DMA from the Eastman School of Music, colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, was professor of organ, piano, and liturgical music at Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) throughout her professional career. At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades.  “Tribute� was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion  “Canticle of the Creatures� (SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. The choral composition will soon be published in both SSAA and SATB arrangements.“Tribute� is of intermediate difficulty but has a challenging pedal part. At the time of composition Sr. Mary had learned to use Finale software and engraved the original score herself. This editor enjoyed spending time with Sr. Mary once a week as tutor while she developed this skill. Unfortunately the original computer file is no longer available and extant copies are not of sufficient quality to publish. Dr. Masiakowski produced the following edition based on Sr. Mary’s score.
