The text of this well-known song first appeared in the early 19th century, and it was published as a shape note hymn by William Walker in his 1840 edition of The Southern Harmony. The melody is drawn from an English ballad that was 150 years old by then. This version was sketched in June 1995 and completed in February 1996. It was first played on March 10, 1996 at Glenwood Moravian Community Church (Madison, WI), by organist Richard Benson and me. It was revised slightly in 2022 for this edition. In the middle, part the rhythmic intensity diminishes but the harmonies retain their colours. In the recapitulation, the theme comes back with renewed vigour and concludes with an exciting pedal solo passage. This piece will delight the audience and the organist and will serve well as a postlude during liturgy or recital. Dedicated to Ausra.

It consists of 4 movements (the optimistic March, the playful Scherzo, the thoughtful Meditation and the fiery Finale) each based on some of the most famous Lithuanian folk songs: I. March Palinko liepa Å¡alia kelio, II. Scherzo Oi lekia, lekia, III. Meditation Oi giria, giria, IV. Finale AÅ¡ padainuosiu. The video example is the premiere performance by James D. Hicks at St. Casimir's church in Vilnius, Lithuania on August 22, 2023. This suite will be very suitable to expand any concert program with colourful, original-sounding, yet listener-friendly music.
