Large Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Clarinet,Flute,Guitar,Oboe,Piano Accompaniment,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.916579 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Steve Newman. Baroque,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 71 pages. Steve newman #3379405. Published by steve newman (A0.916579).   JS Bach, 15 Sinfonias  (3 part Inventions)       Originally for keyboard alone. This transcription separates the 3 voices, so that the bottom two can be played on a keyboard instrument while a treble instrument plays the top.      The original has been transcribed for a piano to accompany a treble instrument like flute, violin, oboe, etc. The piano score has the second voice on treble and the third voice on the bass clef of the grand staff. The flute part is in a smaller size staff above the piano grand staff.      A companion book for the flute, or other treble instrument, is also available. In addition, an audio cd has been made where the flute is in the right channel, and the piano accompaniment in the left channel. This cd is useful as a practice tool to let either player practice with a recording.. You can download the 16 tracks at https://app.box.com/s/wg2vyo7yg4imchnb7zaihk0e3fs1nqaw The user can use panning to either hear both parts, or only the other player’s part as he practices.    All are in the original key. Violins and clarinets can play Sinfonia 15 in the original key of B minor, but the flute range doesn’t go low enough. So Sinfonia 15 has an additional version transposed to E minor so that a flute can play the low notes of the melody line without jumping octaves.  Saxophones and other instruments can play the flute part without transposing if the accompanist has an electronic keyboard. to transpose the piano part. These pieces are a nice addition to the flute or violin literature as study, encore, or concert pieces. Steve Newman, Santa Cruz, Ca. newmans@cruzio.com

Brass Ensemble Horn - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813400 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Instructional,Multicultural,Standards,World. Score and parts. 45 pages. Regis Bookshar #6209809. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813400). French Horn Quintet - Advanced - Digital Download. This must-have arrangement would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts and recitals and could also be performed for church services. This brilliant work by Johann Sebastian Bach is an adaptation of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra in B minor. Bach had gotten to know Vivaldi's concertos while he was an organist at Weimar, where he transcribed ten of them for solo harpsichord and six of them for organ. Originally written in B minor, Bach transposed it to A minor and, while preserving the melodic outline as conceived by Vivaldi for four violins, this later adaptation, from around 1730, for four harpsichords and string orchestra, is far more ambitious. In it, Bach has both tightened and expanded Vivaldi's counterpoint, enriched it with lusher harmonies and expanded the solo parts with greater complexity and greater clarity. The result is a composition that actually improves on the original work. Written in the standard three-movement concerto form of the Baroque period, Bach's Concerto for Four Claviers in A minor is a virtuoso piece for the soloists. Regis Bookshar has now rearranged the first movement of this concerto, marked Allegro, for a French Horn Quintet, while maintaining the energy and virtuosity of Bach's original work. This arrangement is intended to be performed by accomplished players. It may prove to be a huge challenge for many players, but, I think, it will be worth the effort. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (45 pages). In addition to this version for 5 French Horns, other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of Instrumental Quintets, some of which are in the original key of Concert A minor and some have been transposed to Concert G minor, making it a little easier for some performers, as well as numerous other arrangements in a wide variety of styles. I would encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. You may find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement will be a challenge to many performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed working on it.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.862274 Composed by Gioachino Antonio Rossini. Arranged by Kevin P Holdgate. Classical,Opera. Score and parts. 46 pages. Kevin P Holdgate #468774. Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.862274). This is an 'abridged' arrangement of the famous overture to Rossini's opera 'The Barber of Saville' but retains all of the character of the original. I originally completed this arrangement as part of an entertainment contest tracing the development of brass band arrangements and the music played by brass bands through the years. The original brass band arrangement of this work was far too long to sensibly fit into an entertainment program so I went back to the original Rossini score and did my own; very much to suit the brass band that I was conducting. This effectively means that it can be played by all grades of band and makes a great concert opener that is not overly long.

RayThompsonMusic #4267155. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553762). This music was originally attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi, as they were in a Mr R. It is actually made up of 3 different pieces: Gallo's 2nd Trio Sonata in Bb. Mvts I and III, and Trio Sonata No 8 in Eb All 3 Gallo mvts were used by Igor Stravinsky in the 3rd mvt. Scherzinoof his Neo Classical Pulcinella Suite. The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. But even though Stravinsky used Pergolesi's(which were in this case Gallo's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications. These are transcriptions of the original pieces, in their original keys. They are interesting to play and  do not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's final work.Arranged string trio with alternative violin 2 for viola.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1401614 Composed by Joseph Lamb. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Classical,Historic,Ragtime. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #984793. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1401614). Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music.  The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€Â Â Â Â  But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.     Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three†composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.     Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.     One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.†(The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.       This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Throughout the arrangement, the original melody is maintained and featured, but in some sections the background and harmony are altered to feature one or more of the five instruments.  In the Trio, the sections designated by rehearsal marks F and G are slowed and treated as a serenade; the original tempo is restored at H.  In performing this arrangement, players should pay particular attention to dynamics.  Additionally, because of the nature of ragtime, this piece may require more-than-usual practice and rehearsal.     The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.966219 Composed by John Carbon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 92 pages. John Carbon #3586213. Published by John Carbon (A0.966219). The 24 pieces contained in my Short Stories for piano were composed between 2013-2018. I had originally grouped the pieces into a collection titled The Well-Blended Primer (subsequently withdrawn). I substantially revised, in some cases reconceived, the entire collection in 2017-18. Because my original intention was to include pieces that exhibited pitch centricity around each of the 24 possible major and minor keys, the earlier title, refering to J. S. Bach's 2-volume Das wohltemperierte Klavier, seemed to fit. As in Bach's work, some of the pieces in my collection exhibited a pronounced contrapuntal attitude. During the development of the work I had planned to alternate prelude and fugue-like pieces, but the end result was more of a hybrid collection that could be thought of as being influenced by Bach, but even more so by Chopin's group of 24 one-of-each-key Preludes, and systematically key-centered contrapuntal collections by Hindemith and Shostakovich. I was also influenced by shorter character pieces by composers such as Schumann, Debussy and Prokofiev that exhibit a more lyrical, narrative nature, to name only a few composers. In Short Stories, my plan to alternate preludes and fugues, or at least to systematically vary the degree of contrapuntal density, isn't readily perceived. There is certainly enforced variety in pitch centricity, but this feature isn't arranged symmetrically, and there is a range of tonal, modal, chromatic and atonal languages explored in the collection. Stylistically, there are many influences to be heard here. In fact, some of the titles of the individual pieces refer to other piano composers (for example Tea with Claude and Maurice, Czerny's Id, George Sand's Dream and Joplin's Tick). The name of the present work, Short Stories, describes these modest narratives better than the original title and the revised collection is less abstract than the 2013 version. From a pianist's standpoint, I would venture to say, these reconceived pieces are more concerned with color, register and voicings particular to the instrument. Some of the more extensive revisions I made to the original pieces were stylistic ones involving changes in the harmonic language and articulation. In other cases I fleshed out sketch- like miniatures into more substantially developed portraits, or conversely, I deleted what I thought might be considered to be extraneous material that obscured the abbreviated sketch-like nature of the narration.
