Autumn was originally a poem written in Russian by the composer's grandmother (Genya Burwasser) shortly before her death in 1967.  An anonymous translation of the poem was discovered in the early summer of 1986 by the composer's father, who requested that the poem be set to music. The original version of the work was completed in early October of 1986 and was premiered in NYC in the Spring of 1987. The composition, which is in one continuous movement, evokes the eternal transition of nature during the autumn season, and thus the transition between life and death. The poem symbolizes the writer's own affliction while facing the bleakness of her final days. In the end, she accepted her fate, and the work, in its final bars, suggests a sense of that calm acceptance. This is a newly revised 2020 edition of Autumn. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. 3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben.
