The song’s original name was Cervenou Sukynka (Red Skirt Waltz). He recorded the song in 1944 as an instrumental (although there are Czech lyrics).    In the late 1940s, Frankie Yankovic was reviewing a catalog of Bohemian music and liked the song, but thought that it needed lyrics. He asked the well-known lyricist Mitchell Parish (of Stardust and Sleighride fame) to write new lyrics, and Parish did so, changing the color of the skirt from red to blue.    In 1949 Frankie Yankovic and His Yanks recorded Blue Skirt Waltz and it reached #22 in the Country charts. Columbia Records eventually sold 2,500,000+ copies of the recording, and it is estimated that over 4,000,000 recordings by all musical groups have been sold.    This arrangement is intended for a small German or polka band, but the instrumentation is flexible:  2 Clarinets, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax (doubling Euphonium), 2 Trumpets, Eb Alto/Tenor Horn (plus Horn in F), Trombone, Euphonium (both bass and treble clef), String Bass, Tuba, Accordion (or Piano), and Drums. This marvelous arrangement of Peter Tchaikovsky's Coronation March, sometimes called Festival March or Festival Coronation March, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and other festive occasions. This arrangement keeps all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (15 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available to the public for the first time. The Coronation March was ordered by the city of Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Regis Bookshar has now created an abbreviated version, written in Db Major, and has arranged it for a Euphonium Quintet, written in Treble Clef. There is also a version written in Bass Clef, if you would prefer. In addition to this arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Coronation March for a Euphonium Quintet, other arrangements of this festive composition for various instrumental ensembles are also available. This transcription is in the original key of A minor, where it lies perfectly in the bass trombone range while also playable on the tenor trombone with F attachment. The first two movements can be reversed to create a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, or played as originally published. The length of the three-movement work is about 10 minutes and is appropriate for advanced performers.

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon in D, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Violoncello Octet. Three Violoncellos play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of D Major, as is the original version, but, if you prefer, another version, written in the key of Bb Major, is also available. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Composers have often set it independently from the Sanctus. This setting was originally composed for Selina Midkiff and the Appalachian Children’s Chorus in Charleston, West Virginia. The original consisted of only the two soprano parts from Choir 1 and Choir 2. I decided to compose alto, tenor, and bass parts for the first two sections, creating a double choir effect for the final section. Although it is scored for double choir one will find the individual parts easily accessible for any church, school, or community choir. The accompaniment can be played by organ, piano or string quartet.
