A setting of the beloved 1847 Christmas classic Cantique de Noel, originally in French, then translated to English as O Holy Night, and here presented in Spanish as Santa la Noche. This arrangement was commissioned for a particular group which explains the slightly unusual instrumentation of 4 Violins, 1 Flute, 1 Clarinet, 1 Trumpet, and 1 Trombone. Also by request, it is in the Key of Eb for High Voice.The traditional voice part has only subtle changes in rhythm to accommodate the natural flow of the Spanish text and by common custom just uses verses 1 and 3. The instrument parts are closely based on the original accompaniment but creatively express the arc of the text. It can go from violin duet to full ensemble and everything in between depending on the mood of the current lyric. Tremelos and trills are added when drama and tension are needed, sweeping runs for climaxes, spiccato technique, and so forth. As is my trademark, there is rhythmic interplay between instruments and subtle polyrhythms.Written as an accessible piece for an Intermediate group. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon in D, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for an Oboe Octet. Three Oboes play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of D Major, as is the original version, but, if you prefer, another version, written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, is also available. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon in D will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Also in 1933, for the first time the entire floor revue from Harlem's Cotton Club went on tour, playing theatres in principal cities. The revue was originally called The Cotton Club Parade of 1933 but for the road tour it was changed to Stormy Weather Revue; it contained the song Stormy Weather, which was sung by Adelaide Hall. This measure is a good example of how to squeeze in a quick blues note.I like these versions because you can choose between playing the main melody, playing the chords, or trying both simultaneously. If you can eventually playing both simultanously, it can quickly become sophisticated sounding!This version is also nice in that if you strum the more detail-oriented guitar chords, you end up usually playing the melody anyways, which makes this more ideal for strumming with a pick and for practicing vocals.Tips:1. The F# diminshed chord in measure 18 was originally a D7 chord. This seems like a good substitute to make because they contain roughly the same notes but the diminished chord is more original sounding and has better part writing. There is something about D7 chord that I am always swapping out of them when the melody is low. Same concept for the D/F# chord in measure 11. Instead of a famous D chord, the D/F# accents the main melody better, and is more unique sounding.2. It's easy to make mistakes with ties, especially because they also look like slurs. Ties add the to rhythm values together and you don't play the second note, so I normally cross them out with a pencil as they are really only showing sustain.
