Oscar Brown Jr. wrote the lyrics later for his 1960 album Sin & Soul. In 1962 Sheila Jordan recorded the vocal version for her acclaimed debut record Portrait of Sheila.

Work Song is the title track of what is often regarded as Nat Adderley’s finest album, released in 1960.

It is now a standard as an instrumental, but also as a vocal song after Oscar Brown Jnr wrote lyrics in 1961.

The trombone quartet arrangement shares the melody and has a couple of notated solo type sections for trombones 1 and 2.
