Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 19 pages. Jmsgu3 #1085779. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1510579). Tu scendi dalle stelle is an essential and beloved Italian Christmas carol with several notable aspects: Origins and ComposerThe carol was written in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, a prominent Neapolitan priest, philosopher, and founder of the Redemptorist missionary order. Liguori composed the melody and original lyrics while staying at a convent in Deliceto, Italy. Popularity and TraditionIt has become one of Italy's most popular and widely sung Christmas carols. For many Italian families, singing this carol on Christmas Eve is a beloved tradition.Musical Style and PerformanceThe carol was written in the musical style of a pastorale. While it has been arranged in various ways, it is traditionally associated with the zampogna, a large Italian bagpipe instrument. Lyrical ContentThe lyrics poetically describe Jesus descending from the stars as the King of Heaven to be born in a cold, frosty cave. They reflect on the poverty and humility of Christ's birth and emphasize the sacrificial love shown through the Incarnation. Cultural ImpactTu scendi dalle stelle has had a lasting influence on Italian Christmas traditions and culture. It has been recorded by many artists and adapted into different musical arrangements over the years. The carol has also inspired variations and arrangements by classical composers like Domenico Scarlatti and Ottorino Respighi. In summary, Tu scendi dalle stelle is significant as a cherished Italian Christmas tradition, a reflection of Catholic theology and devotion, and an enduring piece of sacred music composed by an important religious figure.

Piano,Voice Duet Piano,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.898494 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary. 30 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #504802. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.898494). Full score. I am a frequent visitor to the Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio, Rome. Shelley, Keats and Corso are buried there among other expatriates who adopted the city of Rome as their own. I am a not a huge fan of the music by Ottorino Respighi, whose work, like the Pines of Rome, reminds too much of Hollywood music scores. But I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered on YouTube a chamber work he wrote for mezzo-soprano and string quartet called “Il Tramonto.†The vocal and string writing are exquisite, quite beautiful and heart-felt. When I looked at the source of the text I saw that it was an Italian translation by Roberto Ascoli of a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. That immediately inspired me to do my own musical setting of this poem. Two reasons. One, it has a Rome connection. Two, two of my favorite subjects in music are all there in one poem: love and death. Unfortunately I did not find the original English version to be sufficiently “musical.†The archaic language was a bit leaden and convoluted. On the other hand, the Italian translation is so much more lyrical and transcendental. I divided the poem into five parts. At the end I decided to tag on a text I have wanted to set for quite some time: Media Vita. I think the subject of this Latin text fits beautifully as a coda or “apotheosis†to Il Tramonto. I. Moderato … Già v’ebbe un uomo II. Andante … Ora è sommerso il sole III. Adagio … Il given e la dama giacquer tra il sonno IV. Moderato … Neri gli occhi ma non fulgidi più V. Adagio … Ho tal retaggio che la terra non dà VI. Apotheosis: Largo … Media Vita Enjoy!!!
