There are 2 music settings for the text; the one used in the medley is by James Murray (1887). The last piece, Go Tell It on the Mountain, is an African-American spiritual, and is considered a Christmas carol because of the lyrics celebrating the birth of Jesus. The song was compiled by John Wesley Work Jr. around 1865. The medley is designed to be played as one piece with transitions between the carols. However, I also introduced alternate endings so every carol can be played as a stand alone piece if desired. The running time of this medley is around 5 min 20 sec. All of my arrangements include bowings, dynamics and precise articulation for easier sight-reading. Joshua F’it de Battle of Jericho is a well-known African-American spiritual, most likely composed by slaves in the early 19th century. Early versions used the word f’it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies. Put into perspective, Joshua’s battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. This short piece (1 min, 50 sec) for piano is the fifth in my series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme music from early nineties video game systems like Nintendo.  The exotic sounds found throughout this arrangement would be described by many  as sounding Spanish, Flamenco, or Egyptian.  Impressions of these musical traditions are often characterized by the augmented second melodic interval and the use of modal rather than tonal organization.  In the minds of many composers, these musical locales once represented the edge of western civilization or the known world.  As such, they serve as creative jumping-off-points to imagine new worlds.The introduction section must be played with a far greater sense of rubato than the playback recording.  At the new tempo, interpretation is more straight-forward.  One technical and fingering challenge lies in the melodic figures in the right-hand that are frequently harmonized in parallel thirds.  The bass ostinato pattern must be played steadily, but the dynamics should still be subservient to the primary melody in the right-hand.  Follow my work at www.bendockery.com.   There you can join my email list to get updates and tons of free music!

It was located at 826-830 St. Louis St.2) It's about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had an entrance gate adorned with a rising sun artwork. The melody is a traditional English ballad, but the song became popular as an African-American folk song. It was recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s, then by a number of other artists including Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White and later Nina Simone. It was her version The Animals first heard. No one can claim rights to the song, meaning it can be recorded and sold royalty-free. Many bands covered the song after it became a hit for The Animals.

The left hand is constantly moving and players will need to choose fingering that works them. I wrote this arrangement for my piano students, who continually are confused by the term , parallel major and how it differs from parallel minor. I've had various students over the years perform this piece on recitals with the parallel major version and without it. There is a nice transition to the parallel major, and the contrast in style between the two makes for a satisfying performance.
