Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.943040 By Toto. By David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Prince Lamont Board Priese, and Robin Dimaggio. Arranged by Jonathan Kilhams. Pop,Rock. Octavo. 18 pages. Jonathan Kilhams #4797945. Published by Jonathan Kilhams (A0.943040). About the pieceAfrica is a song by the American rock band Toto. It was included on their 1982 album Toto IV, and released as a single on September 30, 1982. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 5, 1983 (the band's only number one there), and number three on the UK Singles Chart the same month. The initial idea and words for the song came from David Paich. Jeff Porcaro explains the idea behind the song: a white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past.Paich said: At the beginning of the '80s I watched a late night documentary on TV about all the terrible death and suffering of the people in Africa. It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about if I was there and what I'd do.In 2015, Paich explained the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. In 2018, Paich explained the song is about a person flying in to meet a lonely missionary. As a child, Paich attended a Catholic school. Several of the teachers had done missionary work in Africa, and this became the inspiration behind the line I bless the rains down in Africa.About the arrangementI have tried to keep as much of the original material used by Toto as possible, within the confines of a male voice choir arrangement. The arrangement is for TTBB and piano and can include sound effects made by the choir at the beginning to imitate rain and a thunderstorm. A bongo/djembe drum can be played through the choruses to add more of an African percussive feel. My thanks must go to Gareth Giles who helped create the piano part for this arrangement.Duration: 4 minsAdditional Parts & Social MediaIf you require any additional learning parts or rehearsal tracks then please contact me directly through www.jonathankilhams.com. Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1153109 Composed by Franz Xaver Gruber. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Christmas,Multicultural,Religious,Standards,Traditional,World. Individual part. 8 pages. Richard Hirsch #753352. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1153109). An arrangement for solo guitar of the all-time favourite Christmas carol composed by Franz Gruber. The arrangement starts with an introduction of the melody in arpeggios of natural harmonics and moves into broken chords mixed with arpeggios for the first rendering of the song in 6/8 time. In the second part, at the shift to 4/4 time, the melody is rendered in an African inspired version with natural harmonics reminiscent of tunes played on an African kalimba (thumb harp) woven into the broken chords and arpeggios. As the speed increases, and the volume decreases, the arrangement moves steadily toward a total kalimba version. I like to think of the first part of the arrangement as symbolising a night in the little Austrian village where Gruber lived and composed the song. The natural harmonics and base notes and treble notes on open strings denoting the village chapel bells ringing on Christmas Eve. The second part tries to give a feel for how the melody can stand as a symbol of our common human origins in Africa, celebrating the birth and unity of humanity. The arrangement is within reach of intermediate to advanced students of guitar and is a good introduction to natural harmonics on the twelfth, seventh, and fifth frets. The African inspired polyrhythm fingerpicking in the second part consists basically of the thumb alternating with the index and middle fingers in a repetitive cycle. The second part is notated in 4/4 time, but can perhaps be more easily be read and played as 8/8 time, as practically everything, especially towards the end of the arrangement consists of eight notes. The polyrhythmic second part should have an accent on the downbeat of the first beat of the measure followed by an accent at 3and (an upbeat), just before the fourth and final beat of the measure. Reading the four part harmony of the score may at first present a challenge but if played basically as eight notes followed by eight notes everything should come out right in the end. Refer to the mp3 version provided with the score if in doubt. I do not mark the natural harmonics explicitly in the tablature, there are simply too many of them. The diamond shaped notes in the notation denoting harmonics are found directly above the corresponding fingerings in the tablature. It has been a real joy to work with this arrangement of the song and I hope it brings joy to others in playing it, giving new life to the traditional melody.

Solo Guitar - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1237543 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Baroque,Christian,Multicultural,Spiritual,World. Individual part. 11 pages. Richard Hirsch #833059. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1237543). I offer an arrangement of Bach’s all-time favourite Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring in an African inspired rendering for solo classical or acoustic guitar. The arrangement uses lots of natural harmonics in an attempt to mimic the African kalimba style of music. The arrangement goes in 4/4 time in polyrhythm with a second tier of accents at 2, 2&, and 4 with a slight swing. The polyrhythm makes the final chord sound like an upbeat! The low bases are notated as quarter notes and should be played so that they do not ring out. They are not muted (staccato), except where notated, but they should be kept short to give the piece a bouncy character. The arrangement contains the main melody and chorus sections of the original in G major, although I have changed the original in a number of ways. The first melody and chorus section in G major is prefaced by several bars of natural harmonics and is repeated only after the melody and chorus section in the key of A minor. Natural harmonics appear in many places in the piece interwoven with Bach’s original melody and chorus. I think the natural harmonics give the piece a really glorious ring. The present arrangement incorporates many sections of a sister arrangement of the piece that I published recently that follows the original more closely and works as an introduction to the music with extensive left and right hand fingerings and tablature for intermediate students of guitar. This arrangement, considering the many natural harmonics, staccatos, tempo, and swing, is perhaps better suited for advanced intermediate students of classical or acoustic guitar. With that in mind, I therefore refrain from any extensive left and right hand fingerings for the present arrangement. The piece is a real joy to play and listen to! The tempo for the present arrangement has been set to 140 bpm. I think the pace gives a real swing to the music. The piece may however be played at a faster tempo, e.g. Presto, or somewhere in between. With this great music you can hardly go wrong. The title I have chosen for the arrangement aims to be a play on words as in many English speaking parts of the world the name Bach often rhymes with the word ‘back’ as in a return to some place or time. ‘Bach to Africa’ is then an allusion to humanity’s primordial roots in Africa. Rejoice!
