Publication of the entire  sonata is forthcoming, but the Passacaglia is offered here as a single,  standalone work. I have performed the Passacaglia in my own concert programs  both on its own and as part of the larger sonata. I believe that it works  equally well both ways. The Passacaglia form  originated in 17th-century Spain. It started as a series of strummed  chords that served as an interlude between dances. The term itself translates  as street song. Over time, it evolved to become a series of variations set  over an ostinato or ground bass, usually in triple meter. It is often  indistinguishable from a Chaconne. In character, the Passacaglia is often  serious, or even grave. The Passacaglia  offered here adheres to this tradition in most ways, except that it is in 5/4 instead of triple meter. The ostinato phrase is five measures long and set in  quarter notes. Variations usually occur in pairs and are distinguished by  texture. Beginning simply, the variations build in complexity throughout the  piece. The main theme, introduced in the second pair of variations, recurs  later in a fuller texture. One final statement of the ostinato in bare octaves  ends the piece. The tonality stems from an E harmonic minor scale, although an  added B flat serves to blur any sense of strict tonality.Please note that there are some minor differences between the score and the YouTube video of a live performance from 2018.

This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams for a CD in June 2015 The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... Consisting of the free-form introduction and passacaglia, the piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn tune, and is written in a modern musical idiom that somewhat resembles the style of Max Reger's and Louis Vierne's works for organ, take for example Reger's Fantasia On A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and Vierne's Sixth Organ Symphony. The Fantasia is suitable for recital use, and employs a wide range of organ registrations that displays various tonal colors and sound intensities. The introduction starts with full of energy and concludes with softer registrations. The passacaglia starts off quietly and builds up sound intensity toward its conclusion, symbolizing victory of good over evil. The metronome marks and organ registrations on some pages are suggestions only, because each organ has different tonal qualities and the acoustics in buildings and halls may influence how organist perform the piece. Fantasia And Passacaglia On A Mighty Fortress Is Our God may take anywhere between thirteen and fifteen minutes to perform.

Luis Anjos Teixeira #4736137. Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889432). I found this Passacaglia from Bach among some of my own handwritten manuscripts. It is a phenomenal piece. Bach was definitive a great artist, a Genius. Passacaglia is an Italian word. This music form was originated in early 17th-century Spain as a strummed interlude between instrumentally accompanied dances or songs. In this piece we can clearly experience this „Spanish strumming between „Bars 137 and 145. The passacaglia was redefined in the late 1620s by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi, who transformed it into a series of continuous variations over an ostinato bass pattern (which itself may be varied). I added to this piece some interpretation symbols and rearranged it for the harp but every single note was left as it would be found in the original version.  The piece is appropriate for advanced performers. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering.  The piece is difficult but very Human. It requires focused endurance and some practice on certain passages.  Once learned you will also be playing much better.  Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, from a serious concert hall to a marriage, it is perfect for Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events. When performed Live It will give you back a great  feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the version in D minor for a concert harp, it was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of this score. It is arguably   one of his greatest and most important works. The passacaglia starts with an  ostinato theme, followed by 20 variations. Immediately after the passacaglia,  without break, is a double fugue based on the ostinato theme. This arrangement  pays homage to the great transcriptions of Stokowski and Ormandy, by weaving  the colors of brass, organ and percussion into symphonic textures.   Perfect for any recital,  concert or pops program. This arrangement is scored for brass quintet, organ  and a single percussionist (timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal). Due to the  range of the first trumpet (to C6), parts are provided for trumpet in C, E-flat  and doubling on B-flat trumpet/B-flat piccolo (select whichever part works best  for you). Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes  This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012.   The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes).  Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨  - F G - D E¨ - B C -   F G   - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.
