Menuett No. 5 K. 94 was composed for pianoforte in Bologna between August and September 1770.  I did this trio arrangement to experience this piece within a chamber music context in order to enter the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry   Because of its lively caracter and very short length, It would work perfectly as an introduction piece or for a little surprise encore in the end of a concert.  It is also very easy to play, very appropriate for music students and beginners. I made use of interpretation symbols like fortes and pianos, crescendos etc., they where total absent in the original.  I also had to shorten the length of some notes in order to facilitate the interpretation of the piece on woodwind instruments. The score was written on Finale.  The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. This is the first time that this arrangement is published in Sheet Music Plus. Thank you very much for taking your time to read this text and to listen to the file. The verses of this Anglican priest who was a contemporary of John Donne describe beautifully a dialog between 'Love’ (the Divine) and the human being.  The score attempts to illustrate the dramatic progression of this spiritual dialogue in which the eternal ´Love´ gives himself up to welcome the human being with merciful insistence as a privileged guest at a mystical meal. To make this dialogue clear while the choir takes the voice of the human nature -full of shame and guilt- while the Trebles assume the voice of the Divine Love -full of mercy and compassion-.  Neither the choosing of trebles nor the number 3 is casual: Childhood evokes naturally ideas of love and purity which are attributes of God himself, thus trebles seemed to me an appropriate choice to represent the voice of “Love� and the fact that there are three, is an intended reference to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

The contrasting major theme expresses acceptance, tenderness, consolation, and compassion and hopes for a bright future uninterrupted by calamities caused by ignorance and greed. The off-tonic feint at the end of the composition (in Db major) before the coda symbolizes the utopian dream built by the Dionysian ideal of universal love and empathy. The restatement of the primary theme in the coda is cut short by a D# instead of the expected F#, highlighting the uncertainty and absurdity of the situation.

Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge. Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686. The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books.  The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale.  Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode.  This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’.
