Sande mentioned, in passing, that the rhythm of swing music is a natural fit for the instrument and even sang a few lines to give examples.In the following days, when I began to plan the new composition, I was surprised that the idea of playing ping-pong unexpectedly took hold of my mind and I couldn’t shake it off. At first, it seemed random and unrelated, but then, as I thought about the rhythmic patterns of the game, it all became clear.In ping-pong, the paddle hits the ball and then the ball hits the table in a pattern reminiscent of the rhythm of swing. While beginners tend to play slower, in triplets, the professionals, much faster, with the table note dotted or even double-dotted. Once I realized what my subconscious was trying to tell me, I listened to (not merely watched) several videos of ping-pong matches and discovered a wealth of entertaining rhythmic patterns. Thus the idea for this miniature tuba piece was born.While the tuba may seem a clumsy and awkward instrument, it is actually quite agile and flexible. Each level has the same skeletal structure with varying modifications to help the student build their skills in reading and playing. As the levels get increasingly difficult, the challenge decreases. Ms. DeLuca found her students taking a new level every one to two weeks and these were beginning level readers! Each level includes a workbook sheet that focuses on the patterns and intervals introduced in each song, so the student can concentrate on specific skills prior to learning the entire piece. Here is a 'must-have' standard for your Christmas season, The Little Drummer Boy; presented here in a simple arrangement in C for piano and solo drum.  It begins with the drum only, slowly adds LH piano then both hands for Verse 1; then both piano and drum adds some more texture for Verse 2, then it slowly unwinds and ends with only the drum.  This arrangement was written for a specific duo; a beginning first year middle school drummer and a slightly arthritis pianist.  Thus the drumming is very basic and steady patterns with long stretches before a slight pattern change (there are 5 different patterns).  And thus the piano part has a LH of mostly broken arpeggios so it can be played by rolling the wrist instead of using finger strength, and the RH is all simple detached chords so the arm can go up and down, and it rarely expands beyond a 6th, again, taking the pressure and movement off of the fingers.  Nevertheless, this is still a piece full of character and great for a featured solo this season!

The first part (‘citric acid’) works with two basic rhythmic patterns and their irritation through the addition or subtraction of note values. The interweaving of the two sectors, in which these basic patterns appear separately, results in a structure of the time in the middle (that is, within 'critic acid').The second part ('leave your baggage unattended') combines the aforementioned two levels through the superimposition of natural and prepared tones on the piano. Spancil Hill continues to be a very popular Irish ballad with listeners and guitar players. I have included the chords so that you can use them as an easy accompaniment for a singer or other instrument such as recorder, violin or flute that takes the treble clef melody part. Use the Intro of this arrangement as a basis for the R.H. fingerstyle pattern for song accompaniment . Also weave in and out of picking melody and bass patterns with the guitar fills I include in the score to add interest to the accompaniment . Check out 'The Dubliners' version on YouTube and if you want to play along you just need to place the capo at the 5th fret on your guitar and play the same chords as in this arrangement. I also recorded the audio clip  with the capo on the guitar at the 5th fret. Listen to this intro to Spancil Hill and you will get a good idea how to accompany the song using a flat picking technique of plectrum picking out the bass notes interspersed with a  Down Down Up Down strum plectrum rhythm. This collection of 10 Christmas songs is notated for 13-note (one octave, C to C chromatic scale) instruments with Handbells on one staff and Boomwhackers® on a second staff creating a 2-part instrumental ensemble (requires one set of each instrument). For each song there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note chart is also provided for each song as well as a chord chart when appropriate. This set of scores uses black and white noteheads and is best suited for musicians already familiar with reading standard music notation. For beginning musicians, this same set of scores is available (sold separately) with color coded noteheads. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. Lyrics are provided as well to aid in the learning and teaching of these songs. The number of ringers and whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes.
