Alto Voice,Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1402629

By David Warin Solomons. By David Warin Solomons. Classical,Contemporary,Singer/Songwriter. Full Performance. Duration 300. David Warin Solomons #985853. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1402629).

This song is based on parts of the poem by Paul Valéry Fragments du Narcisse which explains and ponders the idea of the origin of narcissism (self-love)

The words are as follows

Que de ma seule essence ;

Quitte enfin le silence, ose enfin me répondre,

Va des jours consumés joindre le sort funeste ;
Penche-toi... Baise-toi. Tremble de tout ton ĂŞtre !
L’insaisissable amour que tu me vins promettre

English translation by D W Solomons

But I, beloved Narcissus, am curious only
about my very being
everything else has nothing more than a heart of mystery
everything else is nothing but absence
Only what I own, my dear sovereign body, is what I have
The most beautiful of mortals cannot cherish anything more than itself
Sweet and golden, is there a more holy idol
within an entire forest, self-consumed and held
and set in the living azure by so many birds?
Is there a more divine gift than the favour of the waters
and a more adorable use of the dying day
than to return to me the honour of my face?

Please don't be silent, please dare to reply
Beautiful and cruel Narcissus, unreachable child
owning what I hold dear but guarded by the nymph

Let the two of us, you on my lips and I in my silence
make a prayer to the gods that they should be moved by so much love
that they would keep the day held in its purple sunset

Gods! only the pale and tender parts remain of the august day,
It joins the fate of other days that were consumed
It goes down into the hell of deep memory
Alas, miserable body, it is time to become as one
Bend down - kiss yourself - tremble with all your being
The intangible love that you promised
has gone by, and in a shiver, shatters Narcissus and flees.

Composed by Paul Wehage. Christmas,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 74 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #416509. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532891).

Starting from James Pierpont’s classic holiday song, this piece is a irreverental set of five variations which present the well-known in several unusual contexts: an exotic dance in a South American style, a Yiddish Waltz, a burlesque number which features a quartet of soloists. After a much more tame “Chorale-Prélude”, the fughetta on the verse (“Dashing Through the Snow”) leads to a finial exposition of the theme in a Toccata style. Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint- Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) It was at a musical morning concert at the home of the violinist de Cuvillon. She sang a song of her own composition ‚La Source, in which she accompanied herself. I was struck by the fluidity of her playing, which purely and without useless inflections, was quite close to my way of viewing music. This unified and tranquil style came out of her studies with Chopin.” At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa.
