It's also a useful Valentine Day's tune or romantic tune as incidental music for a theatrical production and is in the public domain.

Joplin intimated that this rag was inspired by the Theodore Roosevelt speech of the same. Roosevelt articulated the American temperament of a strenuous life that included, working hard, personal defense (learning how to box for instance) and being a good citizen. The strutting, upbeat style of this rag seems to reflect the upbeat idealism that characterized the United States at the turn of the century. .

When singing along with the recording or playing with a band it's nice to have the tune in the original key. Others will prefer the easier key of Gmajor if they play as a solo.  In general, the piece is idiomatic for the intermediate pianist, with a nice piano solo at the song's conclusion. .

This is a composition that every ballet dancer would know--whether taking classes or actually performing the ballet.  It is pure fun to listen and to dance to and appears here as a piano solo. Also it could serve as a recital piece or even as for any ballet class needing a combination or exercise that required a fast piece in 2/4 time.  From time to time one might here it played by the bands at circuses or  even as incidental music to dramas.

This paraphrase appears in the key of C rather than the original D-flat (the D-flat version also appears here in my repertoire of compositions on this site). Many of my students had trouble with the  5-flats-key signature so I transposed it to C for their benefit.  There is also some additional figuration and textural changes to accommodate the transcription from an the piano/orchestra genre to the solo piano genre. An additional cadenza appears at the conclusion to provide a satisfying ending for the soloist.

Published by Paul Taylor (A0.1376464). The manuscript of this little parlor-song from 1894 currently lies in the National Museum of music history. It represents a snapshot of neighborhood living when children hollered down rain barrels, climbed apple trees and slid down cellar doors rather than staring at their iphones all day :)  . In the later decades it became a dixieland standard as well as a staple of the barbershop quartet genre. In addition it was a popular tune of the time, and was mass-reproduced for amateur pianists in the early 20th century. In addition, this piano solo does contain one verse and one chorus of text written above the treble of the piano part.
