This Quick-Step piece was recorded by Judy Garland in 1943 by Decca Records on her Second Souvenir album.The quickstep is a light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events. Quickstep was developed in the 1920s in New York City and was first danced by Caribbean and African dancers. Its origins are in combination of slow foxtrot combined with the Charleston, a dance which was one of the precursors to what today is called swing dancing.This dance gradually evolved into a very dynamic one with much movement on the dance floor, with many advanced patterns including hops, runs, quick steps with much momentum, and rotation. The tempo of quickstep dance is rather brisk, as it was developed to ragtime era jazz music, which is fast-paced when compared to other dance music.The quickstep is elegant like the foxtrot and should be smooth and glamorous. The dancers should appear to be very light on their feet. It is very energetic and form-intensive. The quickstep is danced to 4/4 music of 48-52 measures per minute.

The song was published in 1924 and featured in George White's Scandals of 1924. This is not to be confused with the Southern gospel song written by W.F. & Marjorie Crumley. The first recordings of Somebody Loves Me were a number of popular versions in 1924 and 1925 by Paul Whiteman, Ray Miller, Marion Harris and Cliff Edwards (aka Ukulele Ike) with the Whiteman version being top-rated. This version was developed from the original 1924 public domain sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in many of  our arrangements. The initial 1920 copyright and first publishing attributes the lyrics to Malvin Schonberger and the music to John Schonberger. Whispering was recorded by Paul Whiteman and his Ambassador Orchestra on August 23, 1920, for the Victor Talking Machine Company at their studios in Camden, New Jersey. Ferde Grofé arranged the composition and played piano on the recording. This version was developed from the original 1920 sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in many of  our arrangements. A fun little waltz.  Paul Whiteman and Ferde Grofe are 2 of my favorites.  The trombones and the Baritone Horn get to play the lead.  A 3rd trombone could easily perform the Baritone Horn Part and a Bass Trombone would have little difficulty playing the Tuba part.

Deep Purple by Peter De Rose and Mitchell Parish is here arranged for string quartet by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Deep Purple was published in 1933 as a piano composition. The following year, Paul Whiteman had it scored for his suave big band orchestra that was making a lady out of jazz in Whiteman's phrase. Deep Purple became so popular in sheet music sales that Mitchell Parish added lyrics in 1938. The second-most popular version, which hit number one on the U.S. pop charts (the 100th song to do so) in November 1963 and also won that year's Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Record, was recorded by brother-sister act Nino Tempo & April Stevens.

It was sung in the movie Love Me Tonight (1932) by Jeanette MacDonald.  Popular recordings in 1933 were by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra (vocal by Jack Fulton), Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, and Greta Keller. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. Most of the available arrangements of this classic tune are in 3/4 time, but the Ella Fitzgerald version is in 4/4 time, so John and I decided to create this version in 4/4 time. We also added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you will like! It's a fun song and not too hard to play!

It was dedicated to the regional office of the Freemasony that was headquartered in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. In the march, Carter used the hymn Onward Christians Soldiers by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan as the melody for the trio, with the woodwinds providing the obbligato above the music. There have been many composers who were Masons; among them are Edward E. Bagley, W. Paris Chambers, Herbert L. Clarke, Merle Evans, Henry Fillmore, Karl L. King and John Philip Sousa. And Freemasony also includes in its ranks such musical luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Gene Autry, Count Basie, Ludwig van Beethoven, Irving Berlin, Roy Clark, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman.

The pleasing chord changes are the basis for the famous contrafact by Dizzy Gillespie: Groovin' High. Revived once again with the original verse, Bing Crosby recorded it on one of the best jazz vocal albums of the 1950s: Bing with a Beat, with Bob Scoby's Frisco Jazz Band. Because of the historic importance and the great melody, Whispering was chosen by Dan Gabel (the arranger of this lead sheet) as his personal theme tune in 2010. Gabel opens every show with different arrangements of the song, featured by Dan Gabel's High Society Orchestra (Hot Jazz of the Roaring 20s), and recorded and featured with great success by Dan Gabel and The Abletones (Big Band).
