The score includes the full duet score and separate parts for tuba and percussion. Percussion backing files are available on request. All except #1 can be performed as tuba solos without the percussion if desired. No improvisation is required of either performer.

Begun in August 2020 with Funk in the Trunk composed for the Moreau-VanTuinen Duo, Feel grew into a short suite of miniatures for tuba and percussion. Feel as a title has a double meaning. In addition to feeling the groove of each piece, it also sounds similar to the Arabic word for elephant which is a common personification of the tuba.

Range: G1 to D4 (C4 is middle C)

It’s a brave musician who, armed only with a piccolo, is willing to walk onto a stage strewn with the assorted weaponry of a determined percussionist. One’s confidence can be shaken to the point of asking, who is the soloist here, anyway?

But the rewards for courage are great: where else will you find bongos, a harpsichord and a piccolo performing together? How many times do you come across a military march in 3/4 time? In what other circumstances would Goldilocks intrude on the Seven Dwarves? What more could you ask?

Percussion required (one player): marimba, glockenspiel, field drum, bongos, suspended cymbal with yarn sticks, sleigh bells, maracas (1 or 2, one hand).

Piccolos required: one (1).

The score assumes a five-octave double-manual harpsichord, but adjustments can be made to accommodate a single without appreciable harm to the music.

The audio file accompanying this blurb features snippets of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th movements.

Violist Noriko Futagami and multi-percussionist Bob (Robert) Schulz have played my music on many occasions, especially as members of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.  Noriko and Bob are a domestic pair and this is a musical Christmas present for them.  

True Confession.  I have always been a fan (a secret and odd admirer) of Morton Feldman's music since I was a graduate student in composition, way back in the early 70's.  When I say odd admirer I mean to say that I admire him from a distance, more out of respect than from any true emotional response to his music.  Why is that?  Well, his music and mine are so different ... But I respect his artistic integrity and guts!!!  

Anyway, The Viola in Bob's Life (of course, I stole the title from MF!!!) is in four movements.  The viola is featured in all of them.  Bob plays a different percussion instrument in each, except he has to do some clever overdubbing in the last because it is scored for marimba and drum set.

1. Allegro ... for viola and marimba.
2. Allegro ... for viola and drum set.
3. Adagio ... for viola and vibraphone.
4. Moderato ... for viola, marimba and drum set.

Quasi-tonal Fanfare for Brass and Percussion starts with a flurry of double tonguing in the trumpets, then rips into a whole series of sections that jump around tonality at random, sometimes following harmonic structures, sometimes not.

The percussion is used not simply as support for the brass, but as an equally important voice, weaving in and out of the texture, supplying important direction and momentum to the piece.

This arrangement was commissioned for, and premiered by, Voices Co. Pop A Cappella Academy, for one of our Junior Ensembles. It is fun and catchy and features a Vocal Percussion part (Beatboxing).

VOCAL LAYOUT:

The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. The Vocal Percussion (Beatboxing) should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with much of the groove and vibe it needs.

The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. As a general rule, the melody or lead should be strongest, followed by any harmony parts (those with lyrics), followed by any background parts (Mmm's / Dmm's, etc).

RHYTHM & BASS:

This Beatboxing part is suitable for medium level vocal percussionists, and is made up of groupings of patterns. Specific Beatboxing notes are included in their own section.

If your ensemble is without a lower voice or a beatboxer you could consider the following options.

- Use electric bass guitar playing the bass part

- Use a drum kit or drum box (Cajon)

- Use a piano to provide some simple background accompaniment

If using clicks or claps, do so on the off beats (2 and 4).
