Bassoon,Clarinet,Double Bass,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download

Composed by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Folk. 34 pages. RayThompsonMusic #849128. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1255616).

Lincolnshire Posy is a musical composition by Percy Aldridge Grainger for concert band commissioned in 1937 by the American Bandmasters Association. Considered by John Bird, the author of Grainger's biography, to be his masterpiece, the 16-minute-long work has six movements, each adapted from folk songs that Grainger had collected on a 1905–1906 trip to Lincolnshire, England.

In a similar fashion to these folk songs, many of the movements are in strophic form.

This is my arrangement of 2 mvts: No.II Harkstow Grange and No.VI. The Lost Lady Found

Arranged symphonic wind dectet (double wind quintet) and bass

No.II Harkstow Grange  (alternate spelling Horkstow Grange)

In strophic form, in the concert band version the theme is stated by the clarinets and horns at the opening of the movement. Shifting between 44 and 54 time, the movement features a cornet solo, which is often substituted with soprano saxophone.

In my version the opening solo is given to one horn, and cornet solo is played on the oboe

No.VI The Lost Lady Found

A lilting 3/4 melody in strophic form. As the tempo is too fast for the conductor to gesture each beat of every measure, the movement is typically conducted in 1 where each gesture given by the conductor indicates a full measure instead of each beat. Every section of the ensemble states the theme at some point in the movement.

This movement is based on the ballad of the same name,in which a lady, who while living with her uncle in a village is kidnapped by three Roma. After being missing for a long time, the villagers begin to speculate that the uncle is responsible for her disappearance, later imprisoning him and condemning him to death. At some point, the lady was found in Dublin by a young squire who loved her and was subsequently brought back to the village. Upon return to the village, the villagers, mere moments away from executing the uncle at the gallows, realized their error and set the uncle free, celebrating the lady's return with church bells (which are emulated by the tubular bells in the closing of the movement), music, and frivolity.

As this movement was not yet completed at the time of the work's premiere, it was omitted for the performance.

For Info:
Green Bushes is an English folk song  which is featured in the second movement of Vaughan Williams's English Folk Song Suite, in Percy Grainger's Green Bushes (Passacaglia on an English Folksong), and in
George Butterworth's The Banks of Green Willow. The melody is very similar to that of the Lost Lady Found movement.

Composed by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Arranged by Brian S. Wilson. 20th Century,Classical. 8 pages. G. Meredith Publications #1077486. Published by G. Meredith Publications (A0.1501543).

This orchestration is the end product of my book entitled Orchestrational Archetypes in Percy Grainger's Wind Band Music. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style.  I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer).

Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country.  Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904.  The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration.  The lyrics of the first verse are:

Adieu, madame, my mother dear,
But and my sisters three O!
Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,
My heart is woe for thee, O!
Adieu, the lily and the rose,
The primrose fair to see, O!
Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,
For I may not stay with thee, O!.

Nr. 43 from British Folk-Music Settings. Composed by George Percy Aldridge Grainger. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Op Nr. 43. Duration 3:30. Schott Music - Digital #Q6648. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6648).

English.

Percy Grainger's Bold William Taylor tells the darkly humorous story of William Taylor and his lover Sarah and it's eventful subject matter, including love, death, unfaithfulness and revenge, is common amongst English folk songs. Grainger's setting captures the light-hearted tone of the story perfectly and is both energetic and expressive whilst keeping its folk-like charm. Originally written in 1908 and published in Grainger's British Folk Music Settings (No. 42), this new Edition Schott publication is scored for either Mezzo Soprano or Baritone.

Grainger's first piano arrangement of this English morris dance tune was completed in 1918 as a birthday gift for his mother. It became extremely popular and was his greatest commercial and financial success. Even this simple tune displays his genius with harmony, counterpoint, and color. This very playable arrangement is an excellent way to introduce your students to the music of Percy Grainger! (2:10) This title is available in SmartMusic.
