The Ellington band performed and recorded the song continuously throughout its 50 years, both in its original form and as a vehicle for individual soloists. The song was featured in a Broadway revue called 'Sophisticated Ladies' (running from 1981–83) earning two awards and eight nominations at the 35th Tony Awards. Mood Indigo is also featured in the films The Cotton Club (1984), The Untouchables (1987).  Harlem Nights (1989) and White Men Can't Jump (1992), among others.
