The accompaniment is sparse and delicate at first and as the piece broadens near the end it is full and flowing. Harmonies are sometimes bare, at times slightly dissonant, or rich and romantic in places. It is a superbly crafted version of this famous air and is slightly difficult at the climax section, but well within the reach of a competent student. It would be a very suitable choice for inclusion at a recital or concert.

It’s one of the most difficult tunes to arrange because it’s traditionally harmonised by only two chords (the tonic and the major triad on the flattened leading note). Somehow if you start to reharmonise it, it loses its essential character. So I’ve constructed a largely unrelated intro and coda and an episode in the middle to give variety. The first trumpet part is showy but not too difficult for a competent player, although a big breath is needed at the end. Horn in Eb, Trombone in Bb, Bass in Eb and Bass in Bb parts are provided as alternatives for brass band players.

Written by Freddie Mercury in 1979, the track is included on their 1980 album The Game, and also appears on the band's compilation album Greatest Hits in 1981. The song peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart in 1979, becoming the group's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US in 1980, remaining there for four consecutive weeks. It topped the Australian ARIA Charts for seven weeks. It was the band's final single release of the 1970s.Having composed Crazy Little Thing Called Love on guitar, Mercury played rhythm guitar while performing the song live, which was the first time he played guitar in concert with Queen. Queen played the song live between 1979 and 1986, and a live performance of the song is recorded in the albums Queen Rock Montreal, Queen on Fire – Live at the Bowl, Live at Wembley '86 and Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719611). The Prodigal Son as arranged here is an adaptation of the final scene of Debussy's cantata which won the Prix de Rome in 1884. Debussy scored his work for three primary solo voices, the mother (soprano), the father (bass), and the son (tenor) plus a couple of minor servant roles. In this arrangement for SATB voices which begins as the prodigal son returns to his home, the father's solo and son's reply are kept, but they may be eliminated and the piece begin at ms. 68 where the entire company praises God at the son's return. Debussy modulated at this point to the key of B major which gives the solo soprano a high B near the end. For choral ease, such as it is, the arranger drops the modulation to A major making the high note a little more accessible for choral sopranos. Being a piano reduction of a Debussy orchestral accompaniment, a competent pianist is necessary, but the choral writing is not overly difficult. The English text is a translation by the arranger.
