Pérez Prado's recording of the song as an instrumental with his orchestra featuring trumpeter Billy Regis, whose trumpet sound would slide down and up before the melody would resume, was the most popular version in 1955, reaching number one for 10 weeks on the Billboard chart. It became a gold record. Pérez had first recorded this title for the movie Underwater! (1955), where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to the song. Nicknamed Big Money by Wynton Marsalis, Rodney played for years with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, whose recordings in the '90s were hugely influential for me. ​ The Left Side was the title of one of the tunes Roy wrote for the group, and it's inclusion in my title was an additional reference to the importance of this time in my musical development. ​ I tried to capture something of the spirit of that time in the composition, and the fact that Ron Blake was also a member of these important Hargrove ensembles added extra weight to the recording for me.

The introductory first movement recalling the ritornello form is followed by a quiet, slow movement. The recurring tone repetitions lend the third movement the character of a fanfare.Petrich studied composition with Pulitzer prizewinning composer Leo Sowerby and under Ernst Pepping in Berlin.The Sonatina was recorded by trumpeter Paul Neebe and organist Ulrich Knoerr in 2003. The CD is titled Te Deum under the label MDG.The 10 minute long work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
