The Candy Cakewalk is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. The music was a marriage of European March and African-American syncopation and was a forerunner of Ragtime. The Candy Cakewalk is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. The playing-time is around one and a half minutes, but can be lengthened by adding repeats at the performer’s discretion. This arrangement of Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess, by Ronald and Avis Romm, features not only a strong connection to Ravel's original work for piano, but also a trumpet line that pays homage to the horn part of the orchestration, and also features a short section of original composition in jazz style that fits in beautifully over the piano melody. This work fits well in recital, as well as serene settings. Length: 6 minutes.   Note to both performers: In keeping in a chamber music concept of sharing melody and accompaniment, the arrangers have decided against printing a completely separate trumpet part, as working from the score encourages both players to view the composition as chamber music, which aids in the awareness of the other performer, and thus creates the strongest possible performance.   Note to trumpeters: the flugelhorn works well as an alternative to the trumpet in this work.

This is the first of two works by the successful Latvian composer for this instrumentation. It was written in 1977 and shows his early compositional style: while freely notated in the beginning, improvisational sections then change over to chordal passages with sharply accentuated rhythm. It is particularly in the freely notated parts of the work that birdcalls and nature sounds appear as onomatopoeic sounds. The particular challenge is not in the virtuosity of the individual part, but in creating the special atmosphere through perfect harmony. As in most other works by the composer, the bond with nature plays a special role. Unlike any other composer, he gives nature a musical voice.
