They are suited to a variety of purposes and could be played by both string quartet and string ensemble. Accessible by standard and style, to the extent that they are rooted in the community they form an illustration of Maxwell Davies’ engagement with his locality, where he has lived since the 1970s.

He was maestro di cappella in St.Peter's Cathedral in Rome in the period he composed this music. In the last 20 years of his life he was chapelmaster in Stuttgart, where his clean Neapolitan baroque style got heavier and full of embellishments.

Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917288). The Child is a Song was composed in 1994 and is dedicated to Dawn Schuessler and the handbell choir of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO. The premiere performance of this piece happened that year on Christmas Eve, performed by singer/songwriter and guitarist Peter Mayer, accompanied by piano and two members of the Gethsemane handbell choir playing on bell trees to accommodate the ostinato patterns. This version is for piano and tenor voice, with optional handbells. If handbells are used, they should duplicate the right hand piano part at m. 16 – 28, m. 53 – 54, and m. 59 – 64. These measures have been marked on the score with an * sign.  The sound clip attached is a digital track which is not ideal since the lyrics are not sung by the digital tenor.  Hopefully, this does not detract from the overall score.
