Originally meant to be a silly, overly sad, tongue-in-cheek piece of music, Nocturne evokes emotions of melancholy, longing, and passion. During the early stages of composing this piece, it became obvious to me that the music was going someplace where comedy didn't feel right. Because of that, I decided to ditch the original instrumentation of kazoo, voice, and piano, and instead went with flugelhorn and piano. Nocturne includes most of everything I love playing as a trumpeter: lyrical melodies, melodies over jazz chords, and a more technical section to show off a little bit. Great for recitals!All of the music was composed in FL Studio, with the flugelhorn part recorded by me and the piano part sequenced using the Pearl Concert Grand sample library from Impact Soundworks.  .

Pérez Prado's recording of the song as an instrumental with his orchestra featuring trumpeter Billy Regis, whose trumpet sound would slide down and up before the melody would resume, was the most popular version in 1955, reaching number one for 10 weeks on the Billboard chart. It became a gold record. Pérez had first recorded this title for the movie Underwater! (1955), where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to the song. This arrangement for violin with piano accompaniment is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Nicknamed Big Money by Wynton Marsalis, Rodney played for years with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, whose recordings in the '90s were hugely influential for me. ​ The Left Side was the title of one of the tunes Roy wrote for the group, and it's inclusion in my title was an additional reference to the importance of this time in my musical development. ​ I tried to capture something of the spirit of that time in the composition, and the fact that Ron Blake was also a member of these important Hargrove ensembles added extra weight to the recording for me.
