The march incorporates his song, Blue Ridge, I’m Coming Back To You. The lyrics of the refrain begin, Blue Ridge, Blue Ridge, I hear the bugle call. Fittingly enough Sousa wrote a bugle call preceding the song which appears as the Trio in the march. This delightful bugle march is accompanied by a basic rhythmic figure on the 1st and 3rd beats of each measure and a sparse woodwind line.   This band arrangement by Jari Villanueva is a delightful setting of the original arrangement that gives the woodwinds and brass a chance to shine in different sections. Pay careful attention to the dynamics to make this march really shine! A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Here is an excellent description of the 24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano by the composer, David Evan Thomas:24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano is a unified cycle of 24 contrasting pieces in all major and minor keys and may be played in sequence, by book, or excerpted in any order that makes musical sense. As in Chopin's 24 Préludes for piano, each major key is paired with its relative minor. But the 24 Lyric Preludes move softly down a descending ladder of thirds and flat-wise around the circle of fifths. Many aspects of the trumpeter's stock-in-trade are explored-double-tonguing, lip slurs, extremes of range and volume-as well as references to rhythms, patterns, and problems encountered by the orchestral player. The tonal spectrum may be widened further through judicious use of cornet and flugelhorn and creative choice of mutes. While there are a few notable links between movements (e.g., the Improvisation to the Nocturne; the return of the Prelude tune in the Finale), each piece deals with a characteristic style or musical idea, and most stand on their own. It became a gold record. Pérez had first recorded this title for the movie Underwater! (1955), where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to the song. Lillian Hardin Armstrong was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader; she was the second wife of trumpeter Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” was originally composed in 1927 as an instrumental piece, with lyrics added by Don Raye in 1941. This popular song has been recorded more than 600 times, notable covers include those performed Gil Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Desmond, Herbie Hancock, the Marsalis family and Earl Hines. When filing for divorce, Lillian sued Louis for custody of the song; Hardin won, though Armstrong continued to claim ownership for years after. This arrangement for concert band has been drawn from the jazz ensemble version by Rick Stitzel and features short solos for trumpet and alto sax. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

Both pieces were composed by Willi for the trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich who raves about the concerto: 'There is an inexplicable magic in this magnificent light/space work which gives both the audience and the musicians great inner pleasure.' This magic, however, is created by ascetic rather than romantic and lavish means. Willi composed a series of brief musical actions, tone repetitions and short flitting snatches of melody. Wind players who are familiar with all kinds of playing techniques are given much room for their own artistic interpretation.
