The solo passages are lightly accompanied, but the interludes  allow the rest of the band to shine. The piece was originally presented in an arrangement for solo tuba and concert band, and the title was chosen as a humorous antithesis of the character of the piece. Ponderosa means ponderous , but the work is light and flowing. Thusit ably lends itself to the repertory of the E flat clarinet.
