Written by Robert Lamm and recorded in 1969, 25 or 6 to 4 is one of the band Chicago's most well known hits.  There was speculation about the meaning of the title, including one hypothesis that led the song to be banned in Singapore for over 20 years for alleged allusions to drugs, but according to the composer the song is about writing music in the early morning, and the title is nothing more salacious than 3:35am (25 to 4) or 3:34am (26 to 4).In any case, this song remains a classic of the rock genre 40 years after its publication, and is arranged here for 10 Bb trumpets.  Most of the higher and more difficult licks are concentrated in the top 4 parts, and the 1st part requires particular skill (leading me to mark this arrangement's difficulty as advanced intermediate), but each trumpeter involved will have have at least one moment of guitar-solo glory.  Perfect for a large trumpet ensemble with diverse skill levels.

The resulting affect action is described as rage or fury, combined with a state of mind of uncontrolled excitement in the sense of being beside oneself or out of one's senses.The personification of these affects was in Greek and Roman mythology with the trio of vengeance goddesses, the Erinyens (Latin furia) called: Alekto (the incessant, the never resting), Megaira (German: Megäre, the envious anger) and Tisiphone (the Vengeance avenging the murder, represented with a dog's head and bat's wings), and another, that of Nemesis (the reconciling justice). In the jazzy middle section, the furies calm down a little, before they pick up speed again in a bombastic third section and increase to the point of ecstasy.

He founded his own private symphony orchestra, organised public concerts in St Petersburg, and founded the Musical Historical Society. He conducted a choir that he had inherited from his father, Dimitri. In 1917 he fled the Russian revolution, escaping to Finland and finally moving via Belgium to Paris, where he and his wife died in poverty in 1930. 'Now ye Powers of Heaven' is a majestic setting, originally in church Slavonic, of a hymn associated with a Lenten liturgy of the Byzantine Rite, that of the Presanctified Gifts. Originally voiced for mixed choir, it is possibly more frequently heard in an arrangement for all male voices, with a very low second bass part. Stepovy's older brother, Theodore Akimenko [fr]), was also a composer. Stepovy was a representative of the Ukrainian musical intelligentsia of the 20th century. He was one of the founders of the national school of composition and composed in the tradition of Mykola Lysenko.Stepovy was a graduate of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied with Alexander Glazunov and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and graduated in 1914.During World War I, Stepovy was recruited to the military, where he worked as a secretary on a hospital train. He served in the military for almost three years, until he managed to get released in April 1917. After this he settled in Kyiv where he worked as a teacher at the Kyiv Conservatory and a musical critic. He was a master at choral and piano works, the author of music collections for children, teacher of the Kyiv Conservatory and founder of the State vocal quartet.

His shorter solo pieces impress on account of their enchanting melodies and their attention to detail, which is also true of the Rêverie for horn and piano. Glazunov was himself a good horn player and played in several orchestras as a young student. It was at this time that Glazunov composed this highly romantic work in which he showed off the melodious qualities of this instrument to their best advantage. It is an effective recital piece, even for advanced pupils, and is being published for the first time as an Urtext edition; alongside the first edition we also consulted Glazunov’s autograph in the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg for the first time.

One should not forget, however, that music was mainly a leisure activity for the professor of organic chemistry in St. Petersburg. His work on 'Prince Igor' begun after the world premiere of Symphony No. 1 finished in favour of the second symphony, but part of the musical material found its way into the new composition, and even the extant programme testifies to the critical analysis of the music theatre: the gathering of Russian warriors in the first movement, the Old Slavonic bard in the andante, and the party scene to the sounds of the gusli in the finale.
