Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, Musician and Murderer! That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.

More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo!

The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

This set of music John Dowland wrote for lute came from a larger group of songs transcribed from the lute notation for keyboard by Peter Warlock. These were songs Dowland wrote for or dedicated to certain ladies: Mrs. White's Nothinge, The Shoemaker's Wife (A Toy), The Lady Rich Her Galliard, My Lady Hunsdon's Puffe, and Queen Elizabeth's Galliard. These are not too difficult to play, although music written in the 1500's may sound a little odd. It is set by John Gibson for three clarinets. Articulations and ornaments are provided, however they are optional to suit the performer's tastes.

The solo arrangements are mostly suited for both re-entrant (high G) and linear (low G) tunings, and the ensemble arrangements are for re-entrant soprano ukulele, low-G tenor ukulele, baritone ukulele and classical guitar. They include adaptations of harmony arrangements by Peter Warlock and Charles Wood. All of the music is kept simple, to be accessible to as many players as possible.

Originally written for simple transverse or fipple flutes, the music is easy to play and very well suited to the ocarina. This book contains all of Arbeau’s melodies, transcribed into modern notation and, where necessary, transposed into the most suitable keys for ocarina. Adaptations of harmony arrangements by Peter Warlock, John Stafford Smith and Charles Wood are also included.

This book is suitable for all transverse, inline and pendant ocarinas with at least six holes. The harmony arrangements are given for transverse ocarinas in C and either F or G, and again for Langley concert pendant ocarinas in D and G. The music is also suitable for recorder consorts and just about any other treble-clef instrument.
