Another work in the series for younger and less experienced instrumentalist with organ, this is based on the Palm Sunday hymn tune Ellacombe, with one of the most popular texts being Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.  Once again, the range and rhythmic demands on the trombonist are minimal, with the easy organ part being very supportive.  Parts are also included for baritone (both TC and BC), trumpet, and tenor sax.  There are two other movments, Easter and Lent, also available separately, or as the complete three movement suite.  There are two other suites from 2020 and 2021 available as well, with two movements of each based on hymn tunes and the other movements being original works.  Give that young musician a chance to shine!  Videos of all three movements on the YouTube channel OrganGuyPhil.

Perfect for Reformation, this dark and brooding organ work is based on the hymn Built on the Rock, the Church Doth Stand, based on the hymn tune Kirken Den Er Et Gammelt Hus, which is also called Lindeman.  Beginning with a darker modal treatment, the piece ends with a toccata style section in triumphant fashion, and the melody is clearly stated throughout.  The work was composed for a two manual instrument and will give you the chance to feature the full, dark sounds of your instrument.  I've included both the 4 page version (to fit on a standard organ stand) and the 5 page version (for a clearer score) for your convenience. Renaissance Gladness.  This is written for the younger, less-experienced player, as all three movements feature limited range, repeated rhythmic motives, and easy key signatures.  For example, movement 2. Arbophillia is latin for the love of trees and was written for William Howard's love songs project in 2016 as a new conception of the idea of love in contemporary times. It is, in spirit, inspired by the wonder for trees as poet Philip Larkin wrote in his 'The Trees', naming them 'unresting castles' in their ability to seemingly die every winter and bloom in green every spring.

The tree is taken as the ultimate symbol for nature, as it harbours micro-ecosystems of ants and funghi, of earth worms and cicadas. Its branches perpetuate in a manner that is strange and yet as natural as we have five fingers on our hands. Numerous proverbs and countless poems have been written about trees. This piece is another ode to them, attempting to encapsulate these aspects through the exploitation of the piano's registers and possibilities for colour.  

William Howard gave the world premiere of Arbophillia on the 26th of April 2017 in Hoxton Hall, London.

Peter Philips, the composer, was born in 1560 or 1561 and died in 1628. He was an English composer, organist, and Catholic priest exiled to Flanders. Philips was known for his keyboard virtuosity and transcribing or arranging Italian motets and madrigals for his instruments. He composed a large number of sacred choral works, with his surviving motets numbering in the hundreds.
The piece is included in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, a primary source of keyboard music from the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods in England. The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book contains over 300 pieces for keyboard, including works by William Byrd, John Bull, and Giles Farnaby, among others. Cosi moriro is listed as No. 72 in Volume 1 of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.
